lyrically I don’t think it’s top notch at all. as far as emotion, that’s my main problem - I don’t feel any most of the time. and when I do, it’s bc of the beat and production not bc of Drake and his delivery

my favorite part about listening to singers, especially great ones, is the emotion that I feel from their vocal delivery. even subpar singers like Mary J. Blige can let emotion carry them when the skill isn’t there. but with Drake, I don’t feel it most of the time. he sounds bored and too melancholic on his delivery in most of the songs. there are some songs where he’s in his element - Texts Go Green, Sticky, Jimmy Cooks. Ties That Bind is also growing on me more and more I listen.

and as I said before, I am picky about auto tune but I think that it can be used brilliantly to achieve an emotional effect. but here, it feels like he used auto tune purely for the sake of using auto tune and covering up his vocal flaws, not to enhance the emotion of the songs

believe it or not, but I was hella hyped when I came into the album on first listen. when I saw it was only 14 tracks and heard it would be a completely different sound, I thought THIS is the album I’ve been waiting for from Drake his whole career! mans is finally buckling down and making a masterpiece instead of trying to cater to everyone and their mama

It is something very different from him and just off that, I was ready to love it on principle. I was hyped af listening to Falling Back for the first time even though in hindsight, I consider it the weakest song on the album 😂 and ofc Texts Go Green was my s***.

but as the album went on, it felt like I was waiting for a climax that never really came in the songs mainly due to the monotonous vocal delivery. then you also had songs like Currents and Calling My Name (although I think it’s supposed to be an interlude?) which felt a little unfinished and ended just as they were warming up imo

overall though, I don’t dislike the album. I thought the hate it got just for having a different sound was and is corny as f***. I have a soft spot for artists who go outside the box and try something new, even if it doesn’t always land 100% so I still like the album a lot for that reason and rank it higher than CLB, Scorpion and maybe even Views (time will tell). I just don’t think it’s a masterpiece though and that’s okay

I give it a 6-7/10 and as time goes on and I “sit” with the album more (I’m a huge believer in that), I may appreciate it more. or I may not, we’ll see. but I just really dislike how you can’t even criticize or say it left you cold without mfs accusing you of being a hater or having some sort of anti-Drake agenda. lol that man is not the sun, moon and stars that my world revolves around

this is a great point and something that I’ve thought about before. Drake is blessed with a really pleasant tone imo and he has a great musical ear even outside of rap. I feel like he could easily be a really good singer if he put forth the effort but he seems to have little interest. it’s purely personal I’ll admit, but it frustrates me a little. there’s no reason Kendrick should have better vocals than him

with that in mind, his lack of emotion this go around and that garbage autotuned falsetto - yeah I wasn’t a fan of singing Papi. sorry
