    Mmm Hmm

    Fax.

I also hate first reactions tbh.

All Fake and forced. Over exaggerated.

first reactions was a cool gimmick a few years ago but now it’s like lol… always just hyperventilation or some guy nodding their heads

I said it that on Scorpion and even on CLB, it felt like he was doing what he felt he needed to do and not what he really wanted to do. Like, "here's the Drake y'all want. I'm really getting bored of this s*** but here y'all go." He was still giving out dope verses but you could just tell that the heart and the passion wasn't there anymore, despite all the success all that music was seeing. I don't know how to explain it but that's really what I think he's been going through these last few years. This album is probably the most he's been able to let loose on a project before. Even on projects like Views and More Life, he had to stack them with 10+ rap songs so his fanbase didn't feel alienated.

Exactly. The Meek situation really changed the way he approached his albums.

On Views, you could hear he clearly wanted to do the pop/dancehall/R&B stuff, but he had to prove his pen was still elite because of the whole beef, and so we got a bunch of uninspired rap songs thrown in the mix.

More Life was made in response to the lukewarm reaction to Views, and he just made it as long as he could with as many different sounds as he could to please everyone, and the Meek beef was still in his head because it was referenced in the rap songs on that project.

Then, Scorpion came, and judging by the singles (God’s Plan and NFW) it seemed like it was gonna be a fun, carefree summer album full of hits, and there were rumors that it would be double-sided, so he’d be able to finally do the full R&B album people have always wanted from him….. Then the Pusha beef happened, he re-worked/added some aggressive/defensive rap songs that really brought the album down, and we got another mediocre overall project.

And finally we get to CLB, which was, according to Drake himself, supposed to be another concise project in line with NWTS. But then the pandemic happened… and then the Kanye beef happened… and Donda came out and it was 27 songs long. I’m not saying that was the sole reason why CLB was as long as it was, but I think it definitely played a part (as well as the fact that it’d been three years since we’d gotten a full length album from him). But once again, the rap songs on this project were defensive and aggressive, mostly because of the Kanye beef.

Honestly, Nevermind is the first Drake album since NWTS that doesn’t feel like a reaction/attack at someone or something in Drake’s life (even IYRTITL was in part him trying to get out of his Cash Money deal). There’s no shots at anyone, no defensive songs trying to prove how great his pen is, no clashing sounds and sonics scattered all throughout a bloated tracklist… it’s a concise, focused, authentic project and that’s why I think it’s clicking so much for the people who enjoy it.

The only thing I wish he changed on this album was maybe another verse or production switch up at the end of Falling Back, love that track but it falls a bit flat by the 3:15 mark

wish majid jordan was on this album

They would have probably fitted very well on this project. Since this is their style and type of music.

They done songs like these together. Like My Love.

At the same time Im very happy it is only Drake. Because it is showcasing his artistry in a great way.

Theory: Hyper Masculinity imposed on straight black men within hip-hop culture contributing to the hate for this album and Drake in general

    Reach or nah

It's like half and half. The beats are def house/bounce sounds that you hear at a gay club. They just love that s***. It can def make people not enjoy it, but a lot of people (including me) like that sound and play it out loud.

It's also heavily tied to voguing.

Besides, Drake is like super straight when it comes to marketing, it's easy to make pride jokes on twitter.

If this album is growing on people this quickly, I wonder how high it'll be rated in like a year. Drake really has one of the most excellent discographies ever. It's damn near impossible to do a top 10/20/30 Drake songs list and now it's getting even harder to make a list for his top projects lol.

It is just great music. Timeless music. Type of music I will be able to put on in 10 years.

I think it is already in my top 5 of his discog, and maybe edging towards top 3 even, but it is a bit too early for that perhaps.

wow I think you hit the nail on the head here.

Wow! you're right so many times he got derailed with his album roll outs and he changed the tone

I do think though that beef with Kanye got him to make a few gems
like mob ties and in my feelings a long with other tracks.

I actually think Scorpion is a great album ..a lot of classic songs on that album. It may be too many tracks but hes so versatile he always tries to have at least 2-3 songs for all his fanbases

CLB got ruined with leaks man. The thing is I think OVO camp was leaking some of it on purpose.

This album seems like a response to CLB though no? The biggest criticisms I heard coming out of CLB was that it sounds the same/has the same formula as every other Drake album and that people didn’t wanna hear a Drake album full of features. That along with the name of the album and the “Big Fan of your Old Stuff” merch it paints a picture to me that this indeed was a response even though you can tell he’s having fun with the music
