is there any song you werenât feeling this time last week that you are now?
Again didnât say they didnât exist. Not as ever present as today though
Tuscan Leather was probably influential in making them more common. Sicko Mode changed everything though
If you canât see the difference in the explosion of post Sicko Mode beat switches on singles and s***, compared to rappers switching beats on tracks that were more so in the mold of freestyle rap cuts for rap heads, idk
Maad City, GOMD, DNA, The Don, New Slaves, Know Yourself were all massive songs as well that had beat switches and were definitely not just rappers switching beats to freestyle more.
I mean Power from Kanye had a sudden beat change that changed the entire structure of the song (definitely wasn't just a freestyle rap cut) and that was literally his comeback single.

Yup hours in silence, I guess its f*** me.
Still don't care for middle of the ocean. Treacherous twins a little
Actually didn't like the album first listen. But that's how I be for all his albums

Some fair points
But Ohhhh you think Power counts as a beat switch now it makes sense. To really have this discussion you have to understand the distinction between a development of a beat/new section of a song and a beat switch. The mood shift and change in arrangement for the outro of Power isnât a beat switch: the same drums, bpm, and off memory probably the basis of the chords is still the same. Thatâs like how people said there was a beat switch on Frankâs Pink And White when really itâs just a guitar coming in for a classic âlayer changeâ. The bar is low for beats developing so some people think any change in arrangement is a âbeat switchâ
Anyway Travis didnât invent it, it was a thing but he made it into the huge trend that it is today. You can point to songs but you probably canât find an album with more beat switches than Astroworld or WZRD
Itâs November 11th, slight drizzles are falling on the hood of my windshield, the sky is a smoke grey hue, I am listening to Hours of Silence and Drizzy is reciting the now iconic Itâs My Fault bridge.
You were lost until meeeee
Some fair points

I definitely agree there has been an upward trend in beat switches as well as the possibilities for what it could bring to a song, but I don't think its fair to point to any single song and say that changed the course of the industry in terms of how they approached beat switches.
I know in the 90s/00s/early 10s a lot of beat switches were on the line of feeling like freestyle rap cuts with a rapper just riding a different beat. But even in the early 10s, GKMC, NWTS, Yeezus, Rodeo, etc. were all some massive albums with multiple beat switches.
I think even if you consider Sicko Mode's beat switching different in terms of it feeling like two different songs in one, songs like Maad City, DNA, Nights, Star from Brockhampton, 90210 (and multiple songs on Rodeo rly), Furthest Thing, etc. been doing that as well.
Need to hear Circo Loco in the club
song still hasnât really clicked for me but you may be onto somethin here
Props to SGP for every beat in this AOTY
