It’s not that thinking that song is boring means you’re “not into rap”.

It’s just that Drake has been doing that exact same formula for his long form rap songs for his entire career, so to continue to hear it from him this deep into his career has become monotonous.

The pen is still sharp, the lyricism is amazing, but the overall execution/presentation of those style of songs from him has been very stale for a while now and could use a spark

Middle of the Ocean is EASILY his best song in that lane imo

Like not even remotely close. This is the first time he’s had a song that could go up against something like Lupe’s Mural lyrically. It’s one of the best lyrical tracks of all time

I find that to be such a lazy critique. Like what is the formula you’re talking about? Other than them just being… long form rap songs? Usually with sampled beats which isn’t unique to him? And with a “state of my life” lyrical approach which really isn’t enough to call it a formula, it’s rap songs lol like I don’t get it tbh

2. The formula is boring and predictable because it’s always:

A. sample based boom bap beat
B. around 5 minutes in length
C. pretty straightforward conversational lazy delivery
D. brag bars/life update/shots at random people in the industry
E. one long verse

The lyricism is great, it just starts to get boring when he only packages his best verses in the same boring delivery every time. He never challenges himself on any of these types of songs, it’s the exact same formula every single time.

Every other legendary rapper is able to showcase their S-tier pen in a variety of ways; it seems like Drake only knows how to do it with this old and tired formula.

That’s why an album full of 10-12 songs from him would be boring, because he’s not challenging himself as an MC on these type of songs anymore

Which drake song do you feel is more lyrical? Because imo he’s never been as lyrically dense as he was here, with the beekeeper entendre probably being his most layered line

When in reality this song is a major level up from something like Do Not Disturb from a rapping perspective

His pen has not stayed the same, but the delivery of showcasing it has. You can have the most elite verse in the world, but if the overall song isn’t captivating then it doesn’t matter.

That’s why I’m saying he needs to figure out a way to showcase his ever improving lyrical ability in a more intriguing way where he’s challenging himself.

That’s also why 10 of these on one album would be extremely boring and repetitive because it would sound like the exact same song over and over again.

It don't have to be exactly like that tho just giving an example of what it could be. Could be an album, mixtape or whatever he feels like marketing it as. Could be a collab with one producer or it could be another collab album with another heavyweight rapper like Ross or Cole... he could take a page out of Tyler and Drama’s book and have Khaled host it if its a tape. Possibilities are endless.

I know some people ain't into lyrical rap these days and that's cool, they'll just have to sit that one out. We got HNM & Her Loss this year, whose to say we don't get a rap project like what I'm describing and full R&B project both in 2023? I think doing s*** like that will really take his legacy to a whole nother level
