I love Freddie and $$$ one of my AOTY but no this review doesn’t do it justice and wouldn’t have made me particularly excited to check it out even tho it’s positive. He’s talking about way too much stuff I don’t gaf about tbh. He touched on the production and Freddie’s technical ability a little bit but I think those things should be far more emphasized in rap reviews than what they are. These critics may be qualified from a journalistic perspective but they not qualified as rap listeners imo. They have no idea what makes a rapper or a rap song dope anymore.

If Kendrick album reception revolved around disses and controversy this much y’all would’ve said it was corny and he needs that to make noise

Y’all notoriously say control was wack

So the flip to “you know this is fire because people are tweeting about the controversies” is wild to see

What happened to it just being about the music (which is goated)

I'd love to ask for an example of what you think is acceptable but a lot of stuff isn't archived from years back. I've been looking myself. I'm just tryna get the whole picture. Is it only something you notice in rap reviews, or are rap reviews the only ones you tend to check out? It's funny because I remember being reviews actually being kinda less extensive than they are now, if we're talking like magazines or the newspaper. Just short little blurbs that would be more summary than actual examination. But idk how old you are or how far back you're talking lol

couldn't care less about those lipstick alley lyrics or captions on twitter rn. music IS good and that is the only reason why everybody needs to play this album.

Alls I know is I f***ed with album reviews late 00s, early 10s but late 10s to now they have been noticeably off in comparison to my taste and the taste of others I know

Listening to Mark’s mix on Night Owl Sound really put in perspective how much 21 Savage has improved as a rapper. Drake in my opinion is near the top tier of lyricists as far as mainstream acts go, so it’s disingenuous for people to dismiss 21 on here in comparison. Not only did he accept the challenging knowing who his counterpart was going to be but he was really rapping fr man. Got to love true growth of an artist

after further review, this is drake’s most hollow album

it’s also his least vulnerable

drake is basically the antithesis of kendrick in terms of values and content

on this album drake is hiding behind his money, popularity, etc more than ever

there’s no denying he’s great at delivering raps but even that is in question cause i hear future’s writing behind a lot of the material and flows

i progressively feel more pity for drake because i can hear how empty his life must be based on this music he’s standing behind

this album isn’t something i’m going to run back over and over

Agreed. To take it a step further, Drake is for my money the best rapper ever in regards of going into another lane and fitting that style (why people consider this a negative is beyond me), but this is definitely a Drake styled tape. 21 got out of his comfort zone on here and did his damn thing man.
