3AM on Glenwood
I think that's my top 5 finally, honourable mention to Middle of the Ocean
after further review, this is drake’s most hollow album
it’s also his least vulnerable
drake is basically the antithesis of kendrick in terms of values and content
on this album drake is hiding behind his money, popularity, etc more than ever
there’s no denying he’s great at delivering raps but even that is in question cause i hear future’s writing behind a lot of the material and flows
i progressively feel more pity for drake because i can hear how empty his life must be based on this music he’s standing behind
this album isn’t something i’m going to run back over and over
Dram is Rory and Mal's guest on today's episode
How convenient

I respect that
Critics just need to stop reviewing Drake man
They obviously don’t get it and never will. Whatever it is they think Drake SHOULD be doing he’s never going to do and the things that he IS doing that everybody loves always goes right over their heads.
I remember back in the Hov, Ye era reviews were kinda accurate. When the streets loved a Jay-Z album it usually got critical acclaim. When the streets felt like a Jay-Z album wasn’t it the critics usually followed suit. The critics of that era actually felt like they represented the culture at least to some extent.
Now critics are whiny, entitled, condescending, contrarian pricks who are impossible to please unless you are on their token rap artist list.
They care way more about stroking their own egos and getting views/clicks than they care about actual music, at least when it comes to rap.
I mean if you look at Drake’s Metacritic scores, they’ve only really been lukewarm/bad from Views until now, which is when most people would say Drake started declining from a quality standpoint.
So Far Gone, Take Care, NWTS, and IYRTITL all have near 80s on there, and most people would agree those are Drake’s best projects.
So I think your point about critics being in tune with the culture back in the Ye/Hov era vs. Drake era isn’t really accurate, because even the culture has reacted mostly lukewarmly to all of Drake’s output post-IYRTITL

The novelty of someone else having a timestamp track was too good
Production and 21's performance was perfect imo

Old interview before the album dropped. They probably had no plans to use it before the drama lol

You want him to rap about having a 9 to 5 or f***ing bricks? Nigga different and is rapping about his life lol
I think people have to examine what they use reviews for.
Which publications do you usually frequent for music reviews, if any? Or a better question might be which ones do you usually take issue with when you come across them? Is it the usual suspects - Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, NY Times, Guardian, etc.? This would make sense since they're considered reputable, trusted sources historically. And they're the most amplified voices...which yeah, is annoying when a review isn't necessarily in good favor.
But writing is an occupation that's taken pretty seriously, and should hold a lot of integrity. Now, integrity has a bunch of definitions these days so who the f*** knows where to start. But at the very least, writers should be given the license to express their own thoughts. I've seen in both of your posts that you take issue with the critics not reflecting how the people or the culture feels about the work. That's not really their job, in fact it might be the exact antithesis of what their role is.
The good thing about that is, there's not only Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, NY Times, Guardian, etc. Theres a ton. Anyone, everyone is writing. Reviewing. Making video breakdowns. It's a wild time. And to bring it back here as an example, though Pitchfork may have given this a 6.4 it's not the end all be all. There are favorable reviews out there, and there are not.
I usually just hit up google and check out the reviews that pop up first tbh and that’s usually one of the ones you named but sometimes it’s somebody else
I disagree that critics should reflect the opposite of public opinion, I think some of them believe that and that’s an issue. Weather we talking music, movies, video games etc the purpose of a review is to help the AVERAGE consumer determine weather said product is worth their time. The purpose should not be to be contrarian and snobbish. Yes it should be based off their professional opinion but it should also have the consumer in mind.
IGN giving GOW ragnorok a 10/10 review is one of the reasons I’m so excited to play it. That review gives me confidence in spending my money as a consumer.
With music it’s different now bc of streaming so we are not actually buying an individual project and maybe that’s part of the problem, music is taken for granted.

drake got into proper troll mode wit that not even a hook or anything

it’s the intention behind it
a lot of it is “i have this so i’m better than you”

Is that not rap in a nutshell?

Rightfully so tbh, either do the timestamp yourself or give it to 21
No halfsies

Hiding from who or what?

a lot of it is “i have this so i’m better than you”
yeah
and that's why kendrick stands out and his music doesn't feel hollow

I personally care more about who had the better music than who has the better life story but that's me. Everybody values different things. Shoutout to two of the best doing it in any genre.
