No. A lot of the biggest songs in rap history didn’t even go top 5-10. Charts are for the artist themselves. Not the fans. Somewhere along the way fans seemed to forget that
Reminder chief keef does not have a single top 40 hit and doesn’t have a project that got over #25 on the charts
Finally rich did 50k fw
If you want Rap to be the "number 1 genre" or pop culture power house, yes
Otherwise no, good music can and will more likely still happen
Charts are just an average of mainstream attention and general look
The only real downside, outside of the pop culture relevance, is that labels will and already have cut budgets and changed priorities from Rap - a lot of it doing to chart performance
Imo tho, Rap also not appearing on the top streaming of the month is a bigger worry than not appearing on the overall billboard 40
As a music listener, I don't give a flying f*** about charts
Or how much an album sells
tf that got to do with me
True hip-hop has never been for the Top 40. Some of the most legendary songs and hits never even made it to the charts.
I really think us as fans and artists need to go back to the album era mentally and marketing wise, because all this talk about hits and singles being the focal point of hip-hop’s health is ridiculous.
Back in the day, we used to get excited about a 5 Mic Rating for Albums from The Source.
Now we getting excited over the Billboard for singles 🤦🏾♂️
A lot of artists need to take risks marketing wise too. I really think Streaming is only good for singles, but hurts Albums longevity.
The best way for an album to have longevity is if the only albums are exclusive to just CDs and Digital downloads like the mid-to-late 2000s to early 2010s
