Honestly, I love both, but Johnny Cash grew old with his art and made it along the way while Elvis unfortunately died and while his music is immortalized we never got to see that elder side of him, Rest In Peace to both by the way.
Definitely. Much better artistry, mystique and songwriting. But Presley's influence can't be understated.

I dont know about mystique, Elvis as a whole is a huuuuuuge character and legend, any reference it him is widely recognized even in the deepest jungle of South America

Tbh, that is more about impact/notability than mystique. Johnny's allure and aura was something to behold; despite the fact that Hurt was not a song he wrote, Trent Reznor of NIN stated that it was now his song, and he made that song much more entrancing and volatile with the power in his voice. Imo, that is what distinguishes Johnny from other folk/country singer-songwriters. Someone from the 1950s, when that kind of music was just starting out and was noted to be simplistic and derivative of the blues, couldn't really compete.
And tbf, they are two completely different fields. Johnny ushered in a new era of country and folk music, while Elvis focused on rock & roll, rockabilly, and rhythm & blues. There was some overlap, especially among fan foundations, but they're different idioms.
link their best albums. I want to really tap in but off the strength of what I know, Cash is definitely the better artist

Elvis debut is probably his best imo
I bet there's rich folks eatin' in a fancy dining car
They're probably drinkin' coffee and smoking big cigars
Well, I know I had it coming, I know I can't be free
But those people keep a-movin', and that's what tortures me
Lmk when did Elvis write anything near this, or anything really.
Got love for Elvis and from a performance/entertainment perspective he's the goat, but if we talking "higher pedestal" you have to take into account the pen.

At Folsom Prison is a good starting point for Cash
Equals tbh
Cash says by far the best live performance he saw in his life was Elvis in the mid 50s
I think Elvis was probably more talented but Johnny Cash just had this pure rawness to him that gave his songs life.
