Is there a legacy act who has a majority 15 year old fanbase? Those kids only seem to consume the music on TikTok and other short formed apps, they aren’t actually outside besides a couple of them

    deftones nowadays tbh

This is also facts, same here, but its interesting how we would just find stuff scrolling through the internet / get CDs passed onto us by older people but these kids are given these songs with these trends completely divorced from the song's original context

I was banned from the aux in my brother's car for a while after playing Maui Wowie once. He didn't get it at the time. Cudi was still on the come up.

We just talked about that yesterday but he f***s with the song now since it's been trending.

It's also crazy how Cudi's had a good mixtape and 2 decent albums and has been able to coast off those for 17 years.

Cudi has more good material than just MOTM 1 & 2 & AKNC imo

Indicud and Satellite Flight have loads of good songs
PPDS is a very enjoyable album & was originally MOTM3
Kids See Ghosts is a good album

SB2H even has a couple nice moments (Embers, Handle With Care, & it does kinda illustrate its point of being him at his lowest even if it's not a good project)

I could definitely do a top 50/60 list of my favourite Cudi songs

have a strange mixed bag feeling about it

i think the fun of discovering a new artist or song back then is kinda lost these days since an algorithm (or tiktok for this instance) can just direct it to you no work involved. i remember discovering mf doom in high school and just being very obsessed with his image, mystique, production, and his rapping ability and discog as a whole.

now obviously someone like doom isnt a stranger to anyone that frequents forums and what not but i have come across times where you couldn't openly say he was your favorite rapper or that he was a top 5 rapper because of the "reddit rapper' stigma he used to have attached to him, but now after his untimely passing, hes grown a new audience via tiktok.

ultimately this isnt bad thing because his music gets to live on for another couple years but maybe i just feel a little scorned of seeing this praise now instead of way back when or how easy it is to find new stuff now lol

You sound pretty agitated in this post. You sure you not mad that Kendrick Lamar has blown up in the past 18 months?

I get annoyed because something old becoming popular again but for a younger audience just never hits the same. There’s a reason “you weren’t there” exists, it’s not to gatekeep, but to keep the essence and imagination of how special the moment or era that music came out was

I can never experience why Tupac or BIG were legends, they died literally as i was born lmao. all i get is nostalgia and have to build a reality off of something that’s already happened presented to me in its best light…i don’t get to determine my own lowlights in real time and form a real opinion

there is no connection to the story or vivid memories of being in middle school while my homie pulls out a notebook and raps day n nite written in red ink word for word to me and tells me about this new rapper named Kid Cudi he just found out about on this new website called YouTube

idk, this where my hesitations begin is your 2nd paragraph

now imagine you experienced dooms music, but didn’t like it at all…you would be forced to not be able to even have that opinion in those spaces because you are now reacting to nostalgia that’s heavily loved and will begin arguing with walls who don’t want to hear a nigga who just heard of doom’s opinion, even thought it may be a genuine critique. now you just ostracized as the dude who doesn’t like MF DOOM

old music becoming popular again, essentially, can’t be criticized due to nostalgia of its greatness which a new listener can’t argue because they weren’t there to experience their criticisms they would have probably had back then too

a nigga can’t tell you “money trees kinda drags on at some points, Dot’s verses seem unnecessarily long” he’ll get banished from talking hiphop when bro might have a point lol

essentially making even listening to the old music and liking it pointless because it’s like “do i like this because i like it or do i like it because it was popular or do i like it because i want to fit in with the fans who do like it and not argue?”

    This is facts.

DOOM was sort of an open secret until he died. I’ve always had him in my top 5, but people thought it was weird because they didn’t know who he was. And this is over the course of 20 years in my experience. His lane of underground rap had a bad rep pre COVID for whatever reason. Even Alchemist didn’t truly get his due unless it was from hardcore rap heads or Mobb Deep fans.

I’m from NY and I didn’t know too many people that f***ed with his music until after he passed. I think many people (mostly the Tiktok and Gen Z kids) got into him after seeing the grieving in mass online. It’s bittersweet because he should’ve gotten this love while he was still here. But I’m glad ppl are paying attention.

If you were a fan of Adult Swim, Madlib, Ghostface, Stones Throw, THUG or Def Jux in any capacity you were likely a DOOM fan.

if i listened to doom back then and didnt like it then thats just it i didnt like it

i dont even think i would get super crazy pushback for it either because doom himself has a very unique but kinda one noteish type of flow that you may or may not like. hes not a kanye type of artist where if you said he sucks his fanbase would wanna kill you about it

idk man, ever since i been on the internet, i have never seen MF DOOM criticism in male dominated music spaces. this not about him specifically tho, just that it’s hard to talk about popular nostalgia from a criticism lens
