Nepo promo is as valuable as the social capital and literal capital part. I'm not listening to Will Ferrell's son's AI R&B for one second without that headline. Even this video is part of that cycle. Nepo outrage gets your name on people's lips. The brand awareness gets someone that much closer to clicking their song instead of someone else's.
The attention economy is a scourge. Making people mad is easily monetized. Fenix Flexin's s***ty song gets more popular as people disqualify it for being AI. You can't have a meritocracy in that ecosystem.
State subsidized culture is a great answer. Didn't expect that to come up in the video. America is full of problems that other countries have long mitigated. Unfortunately, that is what the Medici family spends their money on now. Eroding state capacity so we live in a world directed by an easily manipulated algorithm. It is a class war, and the nepo surge is a symptom of that disease.
This is real s*** and it's something I've been wrestling with a lot as someone who started making videos to have genuine discourse
I realize videos like mine (not necessarily mine) could be Step 2 on some marketing guru's deck for an artist's rollout
I think it's something I want to keep in mind for the future, like SHOULD I really be talking about this?
At the same time though I think a lot of that type of nepo promo attention is flash in the pan. Nobody will really care about most of these artists sans the ones who really built fanbases already like Gracie Abrams or unless they really do have the juice. But who knows
We're on the same page with state subsidized culture though. I know better than to expect it under this regime but at the city / state level things could still be possible, and I have it as something I'd want to see in the future if we ever do have a chance at in-system positive change again in this hellscape
i go back and forth on this. on one hand it’s annoying af seeing that privilege plays a huge part in what music gets attention.
on the other hand, sometimes you have genuinely talented musicians that happen to come from money, like Fred Again or Julian Casablancas.
i guess its a case by case basis. someone like North West for example to me just screams ‘product’ and i’m not going to get anything out of listening to her music. no shade to her because she can only work with what’s she’s given, but someone being born into insane connections and making music through that does absolutely nothing for me as a listener.

Depends how much theyre shoved down our throats and the quality of their work. Like there is a massive difference between a Gracie Abrams and a Sean Ono Lennon

The arts being consumer goods which compete for the public's attention from and act as a pressure release valve for the political issues which underlie them is the tough part. I don't even really care if the TV show is copaganda or the rapper is a materialistic misogynist because I grew up on that stuff and none of it colors who I am. At the end of the day it's just consumerism. We are trying to save shopping. They won.

In any setting never cared for the nepotism s***. It’s life and will continue to happen. If a nigga good at making music or what they do, nobody gonna care. If they suck or do something that warrants criticism, it’ll be used as a slight.
