ArujiSouthland Tales much better than Donnie Darko imo. Doesn't make that much sense but Donnie Darko doesn't either (sry that time travel explanation is ridiculous) Tales is extremely paranoid and has some of the most startling visuals of the 00s

I think directors job is ultimately to direct people (the cast) (duh) so they can make a movie with a unified vision or just to make movie in general.
He picks cinematographer, editor, actors, etc, and then decides what scenes to keep.
Sometimes like with Marvel movies I think they have producers giving a notes to the director on what he should and shouldn't do.
So I imagine it's a dude, who at the end of the shooting day watches the material and says if they should move to the next scene or maybe reshoot it.
