He doesn't actually pay him $2,000 a day out of his own bank account.

Sting simply gets all the royalties of "I'll Be Missing You". They estimated the song gets $750k a year/$2k a day.

If the song died overtime and only made $1 a year, then he'd "pay him" $1 a year. Sting simply just has the rights to the royalties earned.
