If you want a serious answer, I think it’s a combination of Dune releasing in March, meaning many have already put it in the rear view and have moved onto other, newer, shinier things, and Denis falling victim to being a white male. Baker, Audiard, Berger, and Corbet are all white and male, it’s the least diverse set of directing contenders in quite a while, with only Fargeat and Chu having any momentum towards breaking through the white maleness. I think a lot of voters are going for that over another white male. You can argue that Dune 2 is a greater directing achievement than the supposed directing favorites, but then we circle around to the first reason.

For what it’s worth, the DGA did go for five white males, opting for James Mangold over Denis… which is wild, but there’s something going on with the Guilds called the “alphabet conspiracy” where… when people in these guilds vote, the lists they vote from are in alphabetical order versus some other kind of random/non-linear order. It’s why we saw so much craziness in the SAG nominations this year. (Pamela Anderson, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Monica Barbaro all getting nominated despite not being forecasted for Oscar noms.) If the conspiracy is true, Audiard, Baker, Berger, and Corbet are obviously all near the top, and it’s entirely possible many of these people aren’t even scrolling down far enough to get to “V.”
