ThomForkNot being a fanboy here, but I think Nolan has a good bit of an edge up on Denis.
Nolan writes every film he's a part of (Denis rarely writes the scripts he directs) and Nolan has made more films, each of which have been more ambitious than the majority of Denis' work. However, they both have crazy work ethics and attention to detail, and I don't think it's unreasonable to say Denis is getting the chance to be in a similar position as Nolan. This movie (following BR2049) will make or break that for Denis.
100% agree on everything you said. Love Nolan and Villeneuve, Nolan gets the edge for me personally but both are probably the best mainstream filmmakers out right now.

I still prefer the Nolan films personally, although I can’t full speak cause I haven’t seen Arrival yet, absolutely loved 2049 though. But nothing is holding a candle to Inception, that blows everything this decade out of the water in my opinion

Just rewatched Enemy and that movie is nuts. Nearly perfect.
