Here's a sample, the opening ...oh man that rhodes bass and guitar & those vocals

that breakdown
Ray Obiedo so nice on the guitar
Dem' Base Goats is a new series of mine. Quite simply it's a easy reference guide into the world of Bassists from every genre. Now you probably wonder why it's spelled Base? Instead of B-a-s-s?
Well, it's a slight nod to base goat himself - Prince/ 0(+>
He said in a interview responding and chiding a interviewer "Bass to me means B-A-S-E. B-A-S-S is a fish. "
Today's lesson is a great of the musical world by the name of Paul Jackson (he recently passed away in April 2021)
Here we take his debut lp "Black Octopus" as an example of a introduction into this goat and who at that time had sold out arenas all over the globe with Herbie & The Headhunters. This was his solo project on a Japanese label.
Guesting on this album is quite the cast
Herbie's on a track
Bennie Maupln is on 2
Webster Lewis is on 2
Alphonso Mouzon plays drums, Another legend who is gonna kill you.
Ray Obiedo on guitar
Monster players, fam - in every sense of the word. Obviously Herbie is the Optimus prime all star.
This is some funky s*** and this is the drop for this evening
All beasts in the studio
A very creative debut that I'm sure will have you thinking differently the possibilities of music
if you like
Stanley Clarke
James Jamerson
Headhunters
Stuart Zender from Jamiroquai
Marcus Miller (Luther vandross, Miles)
Byron Miller
Victor Bailey
Louis Johnson (Brothers Johnson)
Bernard Edwards (Chic)
Paul Jackson grew up in Oakland Cali to the sounds of funk & groove while he was on this planet. At age 14 he joined the Oakland Symphony orchestra. After some time at a conservatory, he was chosen to be in "The Headhunters" which had a triple meaning coined by Herbie "Jungle Safari & oral s***
He would remain a bit of time with Herbie. Releasing a couple group lp's with "The Headhunters" on Arista. He co-wrote the standard "Chameleon" with Herbie.
Later in the eighties, he would move to Japan and work in tv & advertising scoring for sessions. Later coming back to release project's with Headhunters & solo/group projects as a leader. He passed away in April in Japan.
And there you go, now
On the cover Paul Jackson is dressed up like a Japanese samurai. Probably a nod to his life there playing and recording & living his life from 1985 there until his passing.
The album itself is interesting a display of Funk-Jazz R&B-Soul centered around his heavy raspy gritty vocals. Lots of sick base lines on this. (As Prince would say)
I don't think we are going to see this album be reissued anytime soon on streaming in the US because of the licensing debacle overseas.
With that said, this has been volume 1 of Dem Base Goats. Hopefully you enjoy it, but if low end ain't your thing, you don't really have to sweat that because we will have more
I will cover headhunters another day
Here's the bass he recorded "Chameleon" with :
Her name is "Geraldine" apparently

@woahuhyeah @NewYork @Lawdie @theDonandOnly @BlackLarryDavid

it's a good one & it's in licensing purgatory because of this particular label.

This is ridiculous. Makes me wanna pick up the bass.
Been listening a lot to the marcos and index reissue you introduced a while back

Oh man, there's this guy on band camp. I stumbled him on twitter. I subscribe to his releases. Uhhh I remember I asked him in dm's when he started talking about musician's I loved.
And then one of the bassist's who I am a fan of and saw live, he was like "Oh yea, I did a project with him, it's up on band camp" He wasn't lying, this dude has like 70 project's.
So long story short, going to have a lot of names that no one really pays attention to and find their work that's interesting.
Not really into bass guitar like that, but this was captivating and those songs are pretty f***ing cool.

This is funny cause the guitar player is slapping the guitar
