Imagine putting any sort of faith into white suburban liberals...

Tell me how you’d sell “defund the police” to rural farm workers in Iowa and Missouri

  • Smacked Voodoo

So appeal to the group of people who have historically never had to worry about these kinds of issues...

The suburbs are getting more and more diverse too, don’t forget that

    Simple. Defund the police.

Knock it off with this "respectability" s*** man. Niggas been trying that s*** well before you and I were even born and you see where it's getting us.

You try to say s*** to appeal to groups of people who don't have to experience a particular reality and they still gonna try to manipulate your demands. We've seen this s*** too many times to still be tryna play the "Let's not scare the white folk!" game.

youre right, abolish the police is better

    Where is the proof

said it before, and I'll say it again. The last time defund was in the american political consciousness was when members of the GOP wanted to defund planned parenthood. And defund meant NO funding.

Look, while I believe we do need to have police reform (demilitarization, end qualified immunity, decriminalize d**** and s***work, sending mental health & social workers) the slogan itself is f***ing awful

It sounds like something the far right would come up with to scare rural voters, it has the same ring as “the democrats are going to take your guns” To defund = abolishment to these people.

It’s horrible to call it this way, 2020 showed how important getting the votes from suburban moderates are we can’t kneecap ourselves and have this s*** messaging.

I’m specifically referring to the branding and messaging of the slogan, these principles associated with it I mentioned above are important, but call it anything else, please

    Which alternative are you proposing?

And you really think the average white suburban liberal is going to know or care about what you mean when you say "Reallocate police funding"?

Defund the police literally means the exact same f***ing thing and has the same exact f***ing goal and people still push back against it.

  • May 21, 2021

You can't make sense of niggas who trust in white liberals to do the right thing...you really can't.

Actually this means no federal/state funding. So "Defund Planned Parenthood" is actually a bad slogan because it requires a minimum amount of nuance.

No federal funding. But it's on the federal level, so that distinction should be obvious

By the way the protests were full of signs that advocated for police reform - in junction with posters wanting defunding it painted a clearer picture of immediacy than “make policing just again” would ever do

The slogan didn't matter as much as you think imo.

Whatever method of effective police reform suggested was always going to be divisive.

It's been made clear for decades that US police forces are trigger-happy and institutionally corrupt.

Incremental policies for reform either do little to change that 1, or are snuffed out in the process by the very people they're supposed to hold to account 2

White Americans were talking about "I see you. I hear you. We're listening." all last summer

As soon as the people they were 'listening' to started suggesting ideas for actual change, not just the same old policies half-heartedly implemented for decades that do next to nothing in practice, all that went out the window

Most people have a distaste for cops. White people have less to worry about than black people, but they still get uneasy when they did nothing wrong and have to deal with the police. Most people would agree that things need to change.

The messaging means basically everything when you’re trying to consolidate these beliefs and feelings into effective action.

Only 1/3rd of Planned Parenthood's money is from federal sources. So if we're going to cry about sloganeering being inaccurate, it's inaccurate to say this defunds them entirely which is what it's being used as an example of in this thread.

  • May 21, 2021

I’m not even here to have an argument on policing or politics: I’m just here to say the slogan is semantically and pragmatically fitting. It is synonymous with “refund the community” if you really think about it
