It is weird that the older generations in Japan are so anti-piracy when there are many examples of popular game companies just tossing out entire source codes for great games.

Squaresoft/Square Enix was notorious for the way they mishandled/mismanaged the data for their games lmao it's why ports/remasters for games like Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy 8, Tactics, and Kingdom Hearts 1 on modern consoles took so long to be released. They essentially had to remake the games from scratch because they lost the source codes

So many of their games from the 90s and early 00s fell victim to this, so I understand why the younger generation of Japanese gamers stopped caring about the culture of anti-piracy over there.

It's not just games though, it's also prevalent in Japanese film. But this is actually something America was really bad at preserving too back in the day. It seems like studios just didn't care, or couldn't afford, to keep copies or masters of film reels. It's entire eras of films that are missing and all that remains are remnants that managed to survive.

I do understand the idea of art theft being a big reason why older generations are against piracy. But I feel like piracy can be helpful as it helps prevent lost media. Also, it makes no sense to be against piracy for art theft reasons but throw ass for AI bullshit.
