Rough Trade Records label bosses Jeannette Lee and Geoff Travis spoke about signing Dean and releasing Black Metal

    thequietus.com/interviews/strange-world-of/geoff-travis-jeannette-lee-rough-trade-history-interview

Jeannette Lee: The thing I love about him is he doesn’t have any boundaries. He will do anything that he fancies doing, and he’s got really good taste. When we met him for the first time, he came in, and to this day, I can’t actually tell you why, I was wondering about it this morning – I absolutely loved meeting him. I felt totally exhilarated after. I don’t even know what he said, but I just found him absolutely fascinating. Later on, maybe a year later, we had one more meeting with him, because he’s quite elusive, and I felt the same again. He’s just very inspiring. We’ve worked with many, many great bands, but he’s the one out of everybody that the young kids, every young band that we talked to about signing to Rough Trade, they would say, ‘you’ve got Dean Blunt!

Geoff Travis: He just wanted to be left alone – just put the record out, don’t ask him to do anything – no interviews, no performances, nothing.

Jeannette Lee: When we first signed him, for a moment we tried to treat it like a normal record, but he wasn’t having any of it. He was just, ‘don’t speak to me, leave me alone’, but it’s been an absolute pleasure working with him from afar, and it never ceases to amaze me the amount of people that that record has reached – so I’m saying that was a good signing. Dean just went smash, and the fact that he wouldn’t do any promotion or anything, but he reached so far, is quite an interesting conundrum.
