I think the fact that she was active in his discord + her being found dead in a car registered in his name at least gives credence that they knew each other.
If nothing else, it's definitely probable cause to arrest him as a suspect
But to your point, there really isn't any evidence they were dating. The only thing I keep seeing is the mom saying Celeste said she had a boyfriend named "David"
It's very common for young girls to call their celebrity crushes their "boyfriend". They definitely could have been dating but that wouldn't hold up anywhere as evidence. If I were to guess based on what we already know, they were almost definitely involved with each other to some degree. But you can't prove that legally, yet

I saw this tweet the other day that said the worst thing that could happen to a kid online was ending up in a chat room with weirdo adults. There were whole media campaigns and everything around that.

It's just that isn't proof. People talking about people dating doesn't prove they are. Someone could make one joke/comment that just sticks, and everyone could be saying "oh yeah lol that's her bf".
I don't disagree with you but in order to have solid evidence they were dating you need messages between the two of them, photos of them together, etc.

It seems like he took advantage of his heart throb appeal and manipulated multiple young girls to be pimped for his pleasure. I doubt he was alone in this.
