I need to listen to him more. I’ve only heard this and some of his other stuff a few times. Interested to see if he actually ends up dropping an album tho

you ever heard def mask? craziest intro this is what we call a mic drop lp, even more amazing he produced arranged and mixed it himself. after a decade half absence of no solo lp 😳

    divinestyler.bandcamp.com/album/def-mask

so ahead of his time.... the way he drops the beat on track 2 it just comes out of nowhere

    when that bear finally drops

    this lp artwork

    the concept

this is the blade runner of hip hop , the tension & energy he put into this
    wordplay is so visual 😎

    a interesting commentary 😳

“Def Mask - Engineers of Persona

Scenario - A coded behavioural, psychic implant installs itself based on the individuals attachment to the objective world, his desire to consume. Appetite for power over others initiates the installation. Controlling it’s human host, who continues to assume himself free through the appearance of reason, mobility, access to data, procreation and consumption. Embedded in the mind, directing behaviour to serve the will of the God Machine - the sum total of its parts, People.

The implant can only be deactivated by the act of witnessing oneself. Reality is the loss of ego.

Def Mask - The Def Mask expresses itself through the psychological make up of the wearers surroundings. Societies pathos, the external world man has created through his mental idea of himself, a protection against, psychic vampires, philosophical ideology, religious indoctrination and relational gaslight. The mask keeps others at distance and creates a barrier between the wearer and the multiple realms of psychic pollutants.”

his whole catalog is maddening, my favs are spiral walls- that’s the lp that got him kicked off the major label system. spoken word psychedelic

word power 2 - better sequel than his debut

and of course def mask 😎

which rapper has had a magazine named after him? only one, fam. divine styler

brooklyn pioneer way ahead of his time 😎

He was signed to ice t’s collective rhyme syndicate, if you can picture that. One of the few nyc rappers to move to LA.

He was always the most sought after from his class.

The only people he would collab with are house of pain- ever last, styles of beyond, Very short list of people who were given a feature.

And dj shadow - that gives you an idea of the caliber you had to be with your originality. If you didn’t move him creatively he wouldn’t do work.

Probably one of the only rappers to cut his career for pilgrimage to Mecca, he actually went through that whole ordeal you must endure, that gives you an idea how much passion he had for his spiritual journey. 😎

Also one of the first psychedelic lsd experimenters of hip hop. 🤯

He had a magazine named after him because the founder wanted to know what happened to him and where he went. There’s a book on amazon that collects all the issues. The Who,e story is nuts

He has that jay e energy, you should see his Instagram of his computer graphic art designs. You look at them and it’s like ‘what the hell is he plugged into’😳

    Other fans of divine:
    Common
    Mos def
    Saul Williams
    Everlast
    Ice t
    Jungle brothers
    Linking park
    Black thought

  • One of the best breakdowns on fear of other cultures. Released in 1991 😎

Wiiiiiiiiiiiide reccceeeeeeeeiveeeeerrrrrrr, this mans falsetto & keyboard mastery hitting that riff on dx7. He is channeling 😳 Fam this trio probably recorded this live in the studio together. when he screams out ‘yyyyyyyyyyyaaaaahoooooo’ I bet you the engineer flinched. 🤯

Goat who passed away & recorded with Sting & Toured with jaco - rip to delmar brown, if you want to listen to this record, just type ‘ ‘ bushrock ‘ in your streaming search bar. This man was in goat bands all his life til his last day on earth. His songwriting was unique. Positive & thought provoking. Everyone who worked with him said Delmar was a genius. 😎

Here he is in Gil Evans (legendary miles collaborator) band, one of the most sought after band’s to be in. Many try but few are chosen. When you have Gil give you 9 minutes on stage, that’s how revered he was. What a intro & section. Watch how he hits those notes with the chords. The bandleader is tearing up because he sees the magic. 😭😭 😭
