I didnt really delve into this case, but if the evidence he did it is clear, they're really stupid (and evil in a way) to write that letter. But if the evidence not as clear cut as that sentence says, which is often the case in rape cases, then i can see them trying to defend their longtime friend. They might not believe he's a monster.
Although I'd never do that for a friend. Most people are different than they actually show to the rest of the world
