  • somewhere between the HBCU 80s-mid 90s and the 2000s, academia became "less cool" as academia began to be more associated with elitism and out of touchness versus niggas that was there that really came from the hood so they was more in tune with what was happening with the common man while still being able to "wear the mask" as WEB Dubois would say.

Obvious Cole diss aside it's interesting that more 'street rappers' actually come from the streets than ever before but lyrical street rappers have disappeared

future & drill music changed the streets

Kind of true but educational decline is actually the real reason lyrical rap is no longer mainstream. Just a wasteland of dumb rappers and dumb fans.

But yeah street stories>>normal dude stories.

yeap, educational decline is why so much s*** sucks in general now. why a lot of media is ass, why there's little to no polices consciousness/rising tide of fascism, etc

  • man i wish coulda went to college this nigga dumb as hell

  • s*** is simple. if u want to blow up today and ur just a regular guy from the streets w no connections, ur best bet is to get some traction on soundcloud or go viral on ig or wtv. lazerdim is the most recent example of a guy who blew tf up w this method.

heres the thing tho if u wanna blow up on soundcloud, u cant just have good bars. u need an actually interesting and unique sound to stand out from the crowd bc theres so many people ur competing with.

of course the street dudes who wanna make bread off rap will focus more on finding a good vocal delivery, interesting preset, and crazy beats than hone their lyricism. lyricism is not rewarded as much when the sound of the music is the most important factor.

tbf tho lazerdim is still a good ass mc, he has some hard ass lines, and dude can be funny as s***.

  • I get what he's trying to say but that's a very small minded take and kind of an insult to a person's creative potential. It doesn't matter where you are from, if you are creative or have an interesting perspective it doesn't matter where you are from as much.
