This entire article is as complicit in the issue as it is absurd.
As a black man,I do not agree with the basis of this article. I don’t wanna see black films get slapped onto the criterion collection just cause it’s a decent black film but because it’s a great film in general. This article needs to recognize the fact that in terms of the art offilmmaking,people of color are just behind the pack and I believe black people have been making strides in creating better art in film.
Let’s not ignore the fact that Criterion Channel is continuously adding African American indie/art cinema at a very constant rate.

how many white boys saw their first japanese or indian or whatever film cause of criterion. first thing i ever tell someone about the company is thats its a great way to see other cultures and/or periods of time.

But in spite all things reasonable, they actually use that point as a minor prop to prove Criterion is some kind of industry boogeyman of Western cinema that's responsible for Black American filmmakers not being considered valuable.
Which of course only makes sense if you ignore virtually every possible factor that relates to the topic and their claims.

I’m glad the Criterion fanbase is smarter than most and didn’t fall for it. A lot of black films that are considered classics are already widely recognized for what they are and what they represent.
Releasing a Poetic Justice or Boyz N Da Hood through Criterion would make 0 sense other than to say “we carry black films”. I love the fact that Criterion is actually making a real case in finding lost works of black directors know one would’ve ever known about otherwise. That should be the goal,to shine light on forgotten directors of color,not just to add any old movies to the collection.

The man who wrote that article is more than likely asking Criterion to add movies to the collection that I’m guaranteed he probably hasn’t watched himself,SMH.

Kino Lorber has released a boxset called “Pioneers of African American Cinema” while ago (even its on criterion channel as a collection (go watch it!)). The boxset consist of let’s just say obscure films that popular consensus never heard of which all of them are silent and early sound-era films. There’s one great director from that collection is Oscar Micheaux who was very indie during that time and directed “race films” during 20’s and 30’s. It’s bit of a big name while others in the collection like Spencer Williams and Zora Neale Hurston are less heard of.
My problem is just NYT has loss of journalistic integrity that they don’t know what’s their mission or goal than let’s just add something at a demand. They don’t mention other labels that produce other films that Criterion has. Like Arrow has some blaxploitation films even Warner Archive too.

Exactly,all the blaxploitation and urban films he’s begging to be added to the collection are already released through other companies who have no intentions to give the rights to Criterion. And I’ve actually watched a couple of films from that set,one about a pair of black cowboys and another about a secret agent falling in love with this girl or something.
It’s very interesting to see black films from all the way back from the 30s/40s.

this new one is a direct port from the european studiocanal disc. if i had the old i'd rather keep that

There’s a few copies of the old Criterion disc on eBay for about $50. I’d say hunt it down while you can if you want it before people catch on and spike up the prices.

Started my watch of Kobayashi’s The Human Condition last night. Planning to watch in chunks, the scale of this movie is incredible. The scene when the starving migrant workers arrive :snap: reminded me of the absolute horror that is Come and See
