Didn't realize this was coming out

I just recently made a comment on a YouTube reaction of Baby Boy saying that movie deserves to be in the Criterion Collection 😎

Man criterion is continuing to make some really weird decisions

Whatever team is responsible for handling releases is long overdue for restructuring

Not talking about the releases themselves, talking about the choices made in how they are rolled out which results in wasted slots for additional films, when better opportunities to make something special are so obvious

June has 2 individual Waters films taking up that month. Criterion already has 4 of Waters other major films from that era in the collection. They could have done a cool "Early Waters Classics" set or something with all 6 films and a couple extra goodies, which would leave a free release slot for another film.

One thing that should have happened ages ago is separating all of the recent theatrical releases they've acquired for home video into their own isolated release category and page. So many wasted slots over the past few years where months have 1 or 2 recent festival run films. It was not this frequent when they first announced their new acquisitions branch, and now it has taken over a non-insignificant percent of their monthly release blocks.

Same exact thing can be said for the re-releases for new formats. Upgrading old DVD only spines was a good idea, but the number of re-releases has steadily increases over the past couple years, even for titles that were already hi-res scans in bluray (which is frankly stupid, they should focus on acquiring better scans for their DVD-only titles first). Which again, just pads out each announcment month.

It's now totally normal to click on "Month Titles Announced" only to find a recent festival acquisition, and one or two rerelease titles that dont have gold enough unique supplements to justify the upgrade price.

However, I will commend whatever people were responsible for pushing g and launching the upgrades to Eclispe. This was another thing that should have been done years ago, but actually seeing it finally happen is still very nice. Those sets have some of the films in Criterion's catalog and they've been stuck in s*** quality DVDs for ages.

releasing a early John Waters boxset instead of individual releases wouldn't automatically mean that a free slot would open up for a different release, as a boxset that extensive would take up a lot of money and resources to create (and I know this is a fact since I know and talked to people who work in the home video scene). they started releasing those Waters' films a decade ago and have been spaced out in that time span due to what I assume is their workflow, so it's a bit too late to complain about a lack of boxset now. also bizarre to complain about slots and such when they have increased the number of titles they release monthly in the past few years. we just got 9 releases announced for June, and half of the titles have never seen English-friendly releases.

im totally confused by your third paragraph since those recent theatrical releases that you're complaining about are being released under a separate line (Criterion Premieres), which was created at the same time when they started to pick up more of these new festival titles. i don't understand the ire over a line that gets 1 release a month and also not sure how giving these new films a home video release is "wasted" but ok i guess

im not fully disagreeing with you about certain titles getting 4K releases, as Criterion have released a few 4K upgrades where there is marginal improvements over the previous releases. however, it is frankly ridiculous to suggest that they shouldn't be upgrading BD titles to 4K at all, as most these of these 4K upgrades do show substantial upgrades over past BD releases. they are also not the only label upgrading titles that they have already released on BD, as other labels like Arrow, Shout/Scream, Eureka, and 88 Films are doing the exact same thing, and has almost become a necessity when physical media isn't popular as it once was.

they have also upgrading their DVD-only releases recently, as we've seen Stray Dog, Trouble in Paradise, Classe tous risques, and Viridiana get upgrades within the past few months. hell, even recent new-to-the-collection titles like Birth, House Party, World Cinema Project #5, Desperate Living, and plenty others are seeing HD releases for the first time ever. this to me shows a healthy mix between upgrades of existing HD titles and new-to-HD releases.

  • OMG I’m barely seeing Baby Boy getting a criterion release. No f***ing way

  • I'm gonna have to get rid of the criterion channel. It's way to glitchy
