Preordering King Lear now. One of the greatest

Although the supplements for it are really disappointing. A whole universe of Godard appearances, shorts, videos, etc... and this is the best they can do for such a great film release?

literally every other godard release from them has extras of what you're describing. just go watch those instead

He has exponentially more material than what already exists in the other supplements. Thats my point: the amount of things that could've been included with Lear is overwhelming, and yet they included basically nothing

There's even a decent chunk of work and other contextual material from around the time of Lear's release that would've been great to pick from

so then what could they have added if there's "exponentially more material". it would be great if you could list that out.

The various shorts he released at the time

The collection commercials he directed at the time

"Meetin' WA" is an obvious choice

    His section from Aria

The Darty Report or Soft and Hard -- or any of his other collaborative work with Mieville from the period

A historical commentary on the odd partnership of Godard and Cannon

that's cool but there's a good chance that most of what you listed is either very costly or not available to license. i know for a fact that commercials cost a lot of money to license, as well as feature films like aria. plus there is a chance that richard brody will talk about godard and cannon

Nearly everything i listed has been released on previous gen formats but suffers from low quality

There are tons of Criterion titles with half a dozen largely unseen shorts from the filmmaker that were either very difficult to find or previously unreleased (licensure was created for the release)

Criterion also has many titles that include additional feature films in the supplements

just because shorts or extra films were added in features for past releases for other doesn't automatically mean it will be cleared every single time. that's sadly not how it works. each release is going to have a certain budget allocated to it and it wont be the same for each release, especially at a time when production costs are continuously rising up and eating into the budget

King Lear has been available for free on YouTube for a decade. For $40 i would expect more than an audio recording of a festival press conference and interviews with a third-rate biographer. Especially when it's a filmmaker with an overwhelmingly vast catalogue of work like Godard.

"What exponential material are you talking about? Please list them"

"Well those probably cost a lot or aren't available to license"

"Well every release is different and thats not how it works"

    What angle you got next?

based off that, I would recommend Yi Yi, A Brighter Summer Day, To Sleep With Anger, Shaft, Menace II Society, and The Long Good Friday. if you like crime thrillers, then I would also recommend the Infernal Affairs trilogy
