I’m not talking about death totals, I was talking about death rate. But I think I see the error in my thinking. The vaccinated breakthrough cases aren’t making up a large enough percentage of the overall cases for their lower death rate to really make a difference in the overall death rate. So the numbers we’re seeing now are basically exclusively coming from the unvaccinated population, which even though it’s only a portion of the population total from last year, it’s spreading faster among because it’s more contagious and less safety measures being taken

I’m thinking if it’s younger people dying at higher numbers that should be way bigger news, which makes me think that the numbers we’re seeing are basically exclusively the unvaccinated population, with breakthrough cases making up a statistically insignificant number.

Basically what I’m finding wild:

Our biggest day pre-vaccine was around 306k cases out of a population of 330 million (so around 1 in 1088 people of the at risk population ie everybody tested positive in 1 day).

Our biggest day rn is 260k cases but from a population of around 130 million unvaccinated, meaning around 1 in 500 people of the total at risk population (unvaccinated) testing positive in 1 day.

I guess it’s dependent on what news you follow but it has been a major news story from my ends

The hypothesis you’re also operating under is largely correct, vaccinated people are still largely not dying from this

Making a determination about why break through cases are occurring is such a fruitless exercise until those cases are categorized by how far they are from their last dose. Like I now am a vaccinated case, but per the 6 months studies, I only had like 2 weeks of worthwhile antibody coverage left.

But statistics are just gonna say it’s another breakthrough case. It’s contextless

I wonder if the death rate is rising in younger people or if they are just making up a larger share of the unvaccinated population, in turn making up a larger share of the at risk and in turn a larger share of the death totals?

My solution to this quandary is mandating vaccines on every level of school, and in turn, eliminating the majority of that population that’s both getting it more and spreading it more
