Cases went from 10k in nyc a few weeks back to 800 the other day. Everyone can get tested if they wanted to but no one does, we have too many ventilators we don’t know what to do with them, give people they jobs back
California's situation has been weirdly depressing lately, and I was afraid it would go down like this. We locked everyone up, so the hospitals experienced a very minimal surge and not as many people got sick at once. But now that we're starting to reopen without as much community spread, the same number of people are getting sick as would have had we not locked down. It's just a trickle instead of a river.
All told, we didn't make the curve flat so much as bent it a little bit. Probably saved a lot of lives in the process though. The tradeoff is that our case totals are going to stay like this every day for months.
I'm sure everyone remembers this chart:

The flattened curve keeps people from dying, but it goes on much further. That's what California is experiencing right now. And it sucks because there really doesn't seem to be any end in sight.

surely you aren't saying that you'd rather more people die so that you can go back to normal life sooner
It astounds me how impatient we've all become. But I hope the repercussions of opening up the country sooner than later won't be as bad as it seems. Wish we could all put ourselves in essential worker's & grieving family's shoes & see that staying inside for a prolonged period, although unfortunate is really not much to ask for.

Considering I've been locked up in my apartment since the end of February without complaint, I don't think I can be blamed for wanting a few more options than I have now. I'm only human.
But that wasn't really the point of my post. The point was that there is a price for every strategy. Even the "correct" strategy is just a scientifically-supported way of kicking the can down the road.
Preliminary studies suggest that not all individuals who test positive for SARS-CoV-2 antibodies are immunized against the virus
Initial evidences suggest that the 44% of people with mild or asymptomatic infection have very low antibody levels with little neutralizing capacity | According to these results, a positive antibody test may not guarantee protection against SARS-CoV-2
"The first tests performed with plasma from people who have been exposed to SARS-CoV-2 and have generated neutralizing antibodies against the virus suggest that 44% of people who have been mildly or asymptomatically infected have a very low level of neutralizing antibodies, and half of these have no neutralizing activity, indicating that they may not be protected against a second infection. This trend is reversed in people who have had severe disease, who have up to 10 times more antibodies than individuals with mild infection. In view of this fact, scientists emphasize the need to maintain hygiene and social distancing measures, as the presence of antibodies may not guarantee immunity to the coronavirus.
These are preliminary data from the consortium formed by the IrsiCaixa AIDS Research Institute together with the Animal Health Research Center (IRTA-CReSA) of the Institute for Agri-Food Technology and Research (IRTA) and the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC), with the support of the pharmaceutical company Grifols."
