Actually, hospitalization rates are the best and most up to date metric to use because deaths measure a small portion of all cases. Also, nursing homes are not required to report as consistently as hospitals, so nursing home deaths are sometimes staggered over days and weeks instead of being reported in real time.

Unfortunately, there is no nationwide hospitalization tracker. A lot of states don't disclose that information.

Concerts in California will be on hold until a vaccine or other therapeutic treatments for COVID-19 are developed, according to Gov. Gavin Newsom.

In a new four-step plan outlined by Newsom on Tuesday morning, some aspects of California’s economy could start reopening in less than a month. “We believe we are weeks, not months, away from making meaningful modifications” to the current shutdown rules, Newsom said.

Retail and offices, movie theaters and religious services will be among the businesses and events to resume in phase two and three of the plan. However, mass gatherings will be, as expected, in the final tier of public life to resume.

Stage four means “reopening the highest-risk parts of our economy — once therapeutics have been developed,” Newsom wrote on Tuesday. Among the industries singled out? Concerts, live sports and conventions.

“Therapeutics” don’t necessarily mean a COVID-19 vaccine, which scientists say is 12 to 18 months away from being widely available (therapeutic d**** are used to successfully manage HIV, for instance).

The concert and event industries were among the first and hardest hit by COVID-19, and will likely be the last to recover after it. “I know we’re all ready for life to go back to normal,” Newsom wrote. “But it’s unbelievably important we reopen our economy in a scientific, thoughtful way, guided by public health. Our stores will look different. Offices will operate differently. But we will be healthier.”

I'm gonna drop a bunch of info on you guys, but bear with me. There has been discussion lately about the role of blood coagulation and blood pressure in severe COVID-19 cases. Well, check this out:

"Strikingly, 100% of ICU patients less than 75 years old had Vitamin D insufficiency (VDI). Coagulopathy was present in 62.5% of ICU COVID-19 patients, and 92.3% were lymphocytopenic.

Conclusions: VDI is highly prevalent in severe COVID-19 patients. VDI and severe COVID-19 share numerous associations including hypertension, obesity, male sex, advanced age, concentration in northern climates, coagulopathy, and immune dysfunction. Thus, we suggest that prospective, randomized controlled studies of VDI in COVID-19 patients are warranted."

This is very interesting because scientists have been trying to connect vitamin D deficiency to hypertension for a while now. It's poorly understood, but vitamin D almost certainly does regulate blood pressure in at least an indirect way.

Then you connect these findings with the higher COVID-19 fatality rate among blacks:

and the fact that those with darker skin pigmentation frequently experience vitamin D insufficiency (about 80% ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6075634) because of a difficulty in metabolizing sunlight:

All I'm saying is don't forget to spend some time outdoors every day. And get some fish oil. There is still a lot of research to be done here, but it's hard to ignore that 100% of all ICU patients under 75 in that study had a vitamin D insufficiency. Take it or leave it, but I think this is pretty interesting and has some logic to it.
