Here is what I have gathered:
Governments across the globe and the US had scientists look at the outcomes based upon the numbers out of China and now Italy.
They basically figured out one of 2 things have to be sacrificed, the economy or human lives, and as of right now they are choosing the economy.
Based upon the exponential growth of this thing, doing nothing and continuing life as normal roughly 80% of all Americans would get infected, with 0.9% dying. That's roughly 2.2 million deaths with the majority over the age of 70.
Let's now add hospital beds, ICU's, & ventilators, 50% of people on ventilators with the virus die, the other 50% live. Letting this thing run it's course would require roughly 30 times the amount of ventilators currently in US hospitals. 99% of the patients that require ventilators that wouldn't get them will die.
This bumps this total US death number to roughly 4 million people over the span of 2-5 months. That is the entire population of LA.
Let's now take the same numbers of the US outcome and run it on a global level, IE every country. This number jumps to roughly 80 million total global deaths in a span of 2-5 months.
Social distancing is the first major effort/mindset that if done properly can cut these numbers in half. This is what they are calling "flattening the curve". This is done in an effort to slow the spread and avoid more chances of infection among those that have a higher chance of dying. This results in roughly half the amount of the numbers above. 2 million US deaths, 45 million global deaths...remember this is total in a timespan of 2-5 months.
Let's take it to the next level, which is what European/Asian countries are practicing. Complete suppression, quarantine, martial law, whatever you want to call it. This is locating the hotspots, mass testing, quarantine, and a federally forced stay at home law. Complete social distancing, lockdown, workplaces closed, only emergency items/food/health provided. You will survive, live, eat, drink, but in complete isolation or with family etc...this cuts the total numbers to a few thousand in the US. The virus will peak because it will have literally no one to infect, very minimal spreading...which is exactly why you are seeing a dramatic drop in cases in South Korea & China. Italy will peak soon as they have been practicing this isolation for over a month. This allows hospitals not to be overrun and ventilators to be available.
Here's where it gets dicey, and what China is more than likely in a huge unknown/debate about. Should we see a peak and a flattening out and/or huge reduction in new cases and deaths, and we open the floodgates to the public to allow workplaces to re-open, restaurants, bars, you name it, PRIOR to a vaccine, this thing could very easily have a second wind and we are right back to where we started or it would even be too late and the millions of deaths would occur.
We may be able to lift the isolation law after this first stint in June/July for a month, and enforce it for 2 more months, lift for a month, so on and so forth, but it would be a very difficult transition and would differ by state/city.
18 months give or take for a vaccine, 18 months of a pretty much stopped in it's tracks economy, massive unemployment, 401k's gone, companies bankrupt, these are the downsides to a halted economy for more than 6-9 months...this would most likely result in a major recession or even depression which in it's own would cause tons of death and suffering, most likely a war, etc etc...is this the price you pay to save American lives? Both result in death and destruction.
Damn that last paragraph you wrote got me f***ed up. Very real s***.
