what do we mean by “true imax”? With an exception of the 70mm screens, I figured all the imax screens were the same.

“True IMAX” is pretty much just any original IMAX screen with the 1.43 aspect ratio and stands around 6 stories tall if not more (some are smaller too but still 1.43). All of these screens were originally equipped with IMAX 70mm projectors and that’s the only way they used to show film. Nearly all of these were built between 1970s-early 2000s in museums and select commercial theaters. They don’t make these types of screens anymore unless you’re masking

These days, very few still have them, and others “upgraded” to dual laser (also called IMAX GT Laser) so they wouldn’t have to deal with film anymore.

Then there are tons of 1.90 ratio single laser screens which can still be good but some quality disparities.

I’m not really sure tbh. I think you would just have to look up the theater and what their actual aspect ratio and size is. “LieMAX” is when they retrofit existing theaters to be “IMAX” but its not the true big screen and aspect ratio you would expect

the imax in my area doesnt do reserve seating so u had to get there super early to get good seats. smh

That’s the grand irony of all the discourse these days. IMAX 70mm and these projectors are generations old tech. Some projectors might still exist but many are broken down. If IMAX had its way I think it’d have wanted a full tradition to dual laser, but Nolan keeps it alive.

When TDK released there were 80+ screens with projectors in the US alone. Today, we struggle to get 24 and even less availability for non-Nolan films

Many of these screens closed down, stopped showing commercial films (ex. Seattle stopped Hollywood films this year), renovated out of IMAX due to costs

nearest one is 1.5hrs away not awful

they need to make more 70mm theaters man!!

It’s better imo seeing something projected on 70MM is incredible but I’d choose the digital imax 10/10 times

A lot of the engineering knowledge they need to build those projectors has been lost from employees either dying or retiring

ah, so while cinephiles are screaming for more 70mm screens to be built, they’ve been actively tearing more and more down. Didnt realize this.

also true in chicago they did at a few amcs for this. I have a 70mm imax that opened about a hour from me in the burbs near parents. Going to go when it slows down some
