A lot of actors and actresses are one note though, or excel at conveying one specific emotion so that's all they get cast to do. She's done her job well in everything I've ever seen her in; I don't need her to do things she isn't being asked to do for me to consider her a good actress. She gets a lot of flack, probably because she's in a lot of huge projects, but I think most of the criticism is undeserved or, at the very least, excessive.

i agree that most actors are very one note and most of the a-listers are overrated as f***. and well yeah i have different standards for actors so it's not really anything specifically against her.

  • really like how they revealed how athena became to be personified

Watched this last night and thought it was okay but not great. Weakest aspect of the film was acting and dialogue, i did not really like the ‘modernized’ take on it that Nolan went for. It felt particularly heavy handed and there were some noticeably bad lines/line deliveries. The supporting cast did better than the a-listers here.

I did quite enjoy all the scenes related to the actual sacking of Troy, and what that meant for Odysseus. I liked Nolan further exploring the thematic through line of ‘civilization and its supposedly “great” men bringing about an evil into the world and fracturing society’, which he started with tenet and went even further with in Oppenheimer. the encounter with circe, venturing into hades, and all the scenes with Athena also stood out to me.

I’m of the opinion that the editing and general tempo of this film and Oppenheimer mostly detract rather than help them, though it’s somewhat understandable given the sheer amount of plot that Nolan is fitting into both movies. I can see influence from malick when it comes to cross-cutting between the past and present, but the emotional weight behind those cuts in malicks films is completely gone here imo, as they mostly serve to just transition between scenes and memories. I also see tarkovskys influence, but Nolan just doesn’t have his patience and it takes away from the world-building and visual splendor the film is going for. Obviously Nolan is making movies for a wider audience than those two filmmakers but it wouldn’t hurt to lean into their sensibilities just a tad bit more.

I also felt that Ludwig was treading similar ground for the music during the tenser sequences, felt pretty safe for his standards. I still think tenet is his best score and is damn near revolutionary.

Overall this honestly might be one of my least favorite Nolan films but i respect the effort and ambition

    i f w this!!!

  • I know yall were wondering what I’d rate this movie after finishing it

I mean there are scenes I really like . I enjoy the movie experience but as an entire movie is it perfect no not by any means. Some exposition and characters feeling a bit too much like characters and less human.

Agreed. Nolan’s typical exposition by way of dialogue really hampered the first hour tbh.

All the talk about "we can't make anymore 15/70 projectors because we lost the original blueprints" doesn't make any sense. You're telling me we can create mRna vaccines, but we can't come up with a new design on a projector that can project 15/70? Apple could probably do it in 3 months.

The financial reasoning behind why there isn't more makes more sense than the engineering reasoning.

Only reason they can’t is cuz they’d lose a ton of money. It’s only really 3-4 filmmakers who make movies that make money on this format

Read that there was only 1 scene with 2 ladies that are talking to each other lmao

  • Very fun movie, I think my favorite scenes were the pigs and the sacking of Troy

I walked out of the theater a lil underwhelmed though tbh but that’s prob just my own fault. Interstellar, Inception & Oppenheimer still my top 3 Nolan.
