uyghurs are native to the northwest region of china, which they refer to as altishahr (china calls it xinjiang). they're a minority that for a little under a century now has been attempting to break away from control by the CCP. the 2010s saw an uptick in clashes and violent incidents with uyghur separatists, and the chinese government has become increasingly paranoid of any hint of separatism.

it's probably worth noting it isn't just uyghurs either, tibetans are another minority that has had a similar story of being forced into labor camps as well in the past decade.
