It’s a shame pitchfork gave it such a negative review. I’ve always thought Camp and EP had some of his best music. I wonder how his style would’ve evolved if they never did that, or if he never took their criticism to heart.

I appreciate his transformation afterwards, but it always felt like he was actively trying to be “less corny” in his music, which made his later albums feel inauthentic

The low score was definitely them having something personal against him. I listen to something like Backpackers and he's very clearly talking about white hipsters and the kinda contributors at P4K back then. They felt attacked and decided to hit back by panning his album. Read the review and it's not even about the music. It's some nerdy ass white dude tryna attack Donald for rapping about his perspective and experience as a Black man that was unique compared to what was popular and seen as "Black" back then. S*** never sat right with me.

That aside though, I look back on Camp and it didn't age all that well. Lotta cringe lines that are definitely of the early 2010s. The production felt like he was trying to make his own MBDTF. Which isn't much of a surprise since during the Camp era he was frequently praising Kanye and that album. But the good tracks on the album are so good that they do make up for the bad. I'd say it's a comfortable 6/10. Maybe a 7/10 depending on how much you like those good tracks.
