Steps Beach turning into one of my favs
That s*** is such a vibe
Rocked with it instantly
I appreciate that he did what he didn’t do on his last two albums
World building
Thats exactly what was off for me about his last 2 albums
Especially following an album like bti
So waa there ever closure on Real Love? Who wrote what etc
Nothing beyond what happened. Koto deleted all their tweets about it and S apologized to Gambino for riling people up / defending Koto in that other thread.
Other people in Kotos community are saying they are still "trying to figure out" what happened but idk who half these people are.
Seems to me that the most likely situation is that Glover did everything by the books and Koto either forgot or was unaware it would end up in Binos hands, and Koto may have shut all that s*** down when receipts were given.
But we may never know

Yeah very strange choice for him, world building is like his superpower as an artist so the albums just didn’t reach their fullest potential
That’s like Batman going into battle without his gadgets
In case anyone cares, Fantano reacted to about half the album on stream and dug every song. Only song he wasn't really loving was Can You Feel Me but he said it was cute and a wholesome listen.
Just noticed S followed me, so hopefully I'm not saying anything I shouldn't. Apologies if I have been lol

I get it for Awaken My Love, i honestly think he just legit didnt have time to do a full world for an album during that era as he seemed so focused on Atlanta and the best songs on that album really spoke for themselves, fantastic tracks honestly still some of his most impressive work. Nice change of pace from BTI
but I feel like that really hindered a lot of peoples enjoyment of 3.15, this album feels like a much more solid album than 3.15 to me
I had my first listen on BTI a day before this album dropped and this is NOT better
But I like this album too, I just hope the songs that aren't hitting today start growing on me later because otherwise some amazing songs are on this album
Real man
BTI is easily his best album imo
I do like all of his albums though
Gambino ranking
Because the Internet (Script)
3.15.20
Awaken My Love
Bando Stone
Camp
Because the Internet (Music)
Atavista
Man the script does not make that much of a difference with BTI
This s*** cringe. Was thinking he outgrew his cringeiness when he dropped AML and thought Lithonia was in the right direction but damn these rapping tracks sounds like he tryna fit in and forced
I can see that for a few of his lyrics on here, production and melodies are all on point tho for me
And Yoshinoya has some of his best rapping imo

Honestly the two albums I was talking about was 3.15 & Atavista (I count them as separate bodies of work my bad)
I thought AML had a fair amount of world building with a story although it wasn’t as in your face as BTI. Those other two albums lacked it completely damn near but instead was a collection of ideas & thoughts so I hear you on 3.15
Man the script does not make that much of a difference with BTI
In 2013 I had probably heard at least 500 rap albums it probably closer to 1000 including tapes
And Im not exaggerating when I say BTI was in the bottom 10. It made no sense. I was looking for a concept that the lyrics were not giving me. Seemed like corn bars mixed with pop production. Seriously the worst album of the blog era the hooks are horrible it makes recovery look like illmatic. Soulless and directionless
Then I read the script a couple years later and listened in sequence with that. And just like that it’s a masterpiece and an artistic monument to be reckoned with for decades to come. One of the most brilliant and ambitious things an artist has ever done with the album format
The script makes all the difference.

The album leaked like 3 days before the script came out, it was one of my favorite first listens ever. Then the script just put it over the top and gave you more context.
It also functions as something to think about in the back of your mind when you listen to it, I just would still play the album without it

I think the world building of AML is slept on
Probably because the VR experience is lost media now
But also the whole theme of the album might be slept on
I never really hear people talk about the heavy parenthood themes on there
And I think it’s actually a prequel to BTI and it’s from the perspective of the father of The Boy
The album arts being so similar is world building in itself
There’s something there. It’s the album made by the father of the boy who made BTI. That’s why it sounds the way it does.
And these themes would come even more full circle in a directly personal level with 3.15 songs like Hunted but it was already there on songs like Zombies and Terrified
And Me and Your Mama/The Night Me and Your Mama Met/Stand Tall lay out a pretty clear concept.
Stand Tall visual on the VR was great it was like a force ghost hologram talking to his son in the future

I just hated the production and his rap style at the time it was like a collab between Big Sean and Dr Luke or something. I was so confused that it was supposed to have a concept and he was just punchline rapping. Didn’t make sense until the script. Kendrick had raised the bar at that time and I just wasn’t tryna hear a faux concept album that can’t stay on topic. I still think for as great of a writer and world builder he is childish never fully stuck the landing on making an album that actually gets its point across without extra media or mental gymnastics
But I still think he is a brilliant artist
Y'all are overdoing it by having 3.15.20 ranked drastically different from Atavista
War Lords/Shock, Summer & We Are... really
Admittedly I know a lot of folks preferred the longer original version of Why Go To The Party
