Just a month-and-a-half ago, the Hornets were 12 games under .500. Rumors swirled about LaMelo Ball wanting to be traded. Charlotte was counted among the tankers.
Last night, the Hornets crossed the threshold to winning record – 32-31 – with a victory over the Celtics.
No team has ever gone from further below .500 to a winning record within a season.
Just four teams in NBA history have gone from 12 games below .500 to a winning record:
2025-26 Charlotte Hornets: 16-28 to 32-31
2004-05 New Jersey Nets: 12-24 to 42-40
1976-77 Chicago Bulls: 2-14 to 44-38
1974-75 Milwaukee Bucks: 1-13 to 22-21 (finished 38-44)
Charlotte has flipped its fortunes uniquely quickly, going on a 16-3 tear.
The Hornets have won six straight by more than 15 points – the second-longest such streak in NBA history.
The champion 2003-04 Pistons won seven straight by more than 15.
Four other teams are tied with Charlotte, most recently the champion 2017-18 Warriors.
The Hornets’ streak, while impressive, warrants context. Four of the wins came over tanking teams (Washington, Chicago, Indiana and Dallas). Another was over the Trail Blazers without Deni Avdija.
But Charlotte beat the Celtics by 29 last night and has excelled over a larger sample lately.
The Hornets will attempt to match Detroit’s record against the Heat tomorrow.
