Man this year has given me so much hope that Rap that isn’t just f*** s*** mumble trap BS anymore

Between this Chance album, Clipse, Tyler, Freddie Gibbs, Kevin Abstract, and McKinley Dixon there’s some really special, creative, vulnerable, and technically skilled rap that dropped

That new saba album is fire too

  • Really good album. It has some misses for me but I think I need to get into the lyrics next few listens because I do feel like thats where he leveled up this album.

I think he clearly tried to emulate the Coloring Book template on this and it worked for the most part. Some special songs on here... I think No More Old Men, Speed of Love and Letters are some of Chance's best songs ever.

Definitely some whiffs... I think the song with Thug and TiaCorine coulda just not been on here (similar to Mixtape off Coloring Book... but at least that song felt like this "new gen moment" kinda situation,) same thing with Burn Ya Block. No real reason for that song to exist let alone be on the first Chance the Rapper album in six years

Overall really happy with this, definitely one of my favorite ten or so rap albums of the year so far - think it provides him a good foundation to really get this s*** cracking again. Hopefully he starts dropping more frequently.

It's the Four Black Commandments, man, you know how we rock
It goes one, watch your health, that's your wealth
Two, watch yo' brother, that's yourself
Three, watch your home, that's your door
Four, if they want it, we go to war
In the distant future, the twilight of our lives
Contains all the laughs and highlights of our lives
The knowledge that could help a young man go forth
'Fore the day you don't see these old men no more

Thats what I’m saying let a sane ungoopified ye touch up that beat, you’d have one of the greatest riot songs ever.

Like I see the vision but you can definitely hear the limitations of what “imitating someone’s production” sounds like when you just…don’t have the actual person there.
