Banger after banger, csm part 2 vol 1 >> csm part 1 vol 1 so far. Perfect way to reintroduce denji. The theme of the chapter being heroism and the act of saving someone was well executed, looking at the different ways the 3 protagonists of this chapter handle it. Denji of course being the selfish half devil choosing what he selfishly prefers without remorse or second thought, mitaka doing what she feels will make her more accepted by others, and yuko geniunely saving people because its a good action to her. And it reflects perfectly their personality, another thing fujimoto does great. The parallel between mitaka saving a cat and denji doing it was also great, and honestly shows denji in a somewhat "negative" light? Both mitaka and denji saved a cat but lost others, but mitaka shows geniune depsair while to denji its a normal occurence, due also to the many human deaths he has witnessed. And the fact tv celebrated his action as if it was a heroic deed was again a classic fujimoto cynical commentary on today's world. This also would explain mitaka's hatred for chainsaw man, being a devil celebrated as a hero despite not being one. Her convo with war devil was fantastic, and showed her what a human interaction and a new friendship can do to a person. She was a self hating girl who after her parents death lost her self respect doing everything in her power to look for validation, but having someone who geniunely cared about her made her change. Its interesting how she said in an almost teenage rebellion tone she'd live hsr second life selfishly, but so far she's never made a selfish decision. Her act of saving yuko not only went against what she previously stood for, but also against the war devil, showing actual agency over her actions, something that may give her a bigger self esteem.
Her tripping and falling at the worst moments reminded me of kobeni, and now i miss her.
The first pages are masterclass in paneling, and in general the close ups of mitaka's face and her expressions are top notch too. Never has been a time a camera shot felt off in this manga. Pages 6-11 should be taught in school, especially the turn from 10 to 11. Same for pages 25-30. Perfect entrance for the boy.
Btw, fujimoto really likes cats cause he almost always uses them as a device to tell a emotional flashback lmfao
