It's been that way since Die Lit, it's smart tho cuz people gravitate towards image more than music nowadays.

A lot of these guys brand themselves as icons in the like of David Bowie but the music itself isn’t anywhere near as interesting and although I do regard Carti as one of the more interesting acts in todays music, he also falls victim to this to a large extent. The release of the cover is a prime example of what OP is talking about and I think it serves as a microcosm of the overall argument. Here you have this overly vectorized imitation of these brilliant punk scans from the 70s or 80s that lacks the substance the original images that inspired it does. However, it invokes the spirit and that spirit seemingly dictates how most feel about the music but if you were to strip it all back and just leave the music, I’m not sure it holds up.

I'm not saying Carti should rap like Kendrick Lamar lol I'm just saying he's using all this punk/death metal branding to sell the same generic subject matter he always has

    lol that's 2020 rap.
    thats this new gen's superstars.

just accept it for what it is, the last authentic genuine rappers has been and gone. we in a new era. carti's look is at least refreshing

same dialogue every time carti drops, very sad scenes.

if you ask me, carti just doesn't have the musical creativity/vision to fit that image tbh. he makes good music for those who are fans, but folk put him on a pedestal way beyond his scope. he just covers it up with that branding.

he's not a Andre, Kanye, Kendrick, etc., there's nothing really that stands out. that's just me tho.

He's not even a prime Travis. Carti's music isn't all that discernable from Uzi's imo. Don't really understand why savvy music listeners try to front like he's this avant garde artist.

punk doesn't really require talent. that's a big basis for the original genre and culture-- that anyone could've picked up a guitar and make a band in their garage and jam out.

the reality is that being original or experimenting means a potential backlash. yeah, his core stans might eat up whatever he decides to drop, but staying the course means a more stable income from casual listeners (most of the time). unfortunately. it's easier to put a veil over it to allure listeners and make them stay with the same s*** you've been doing all these years.

That’s not entirely true but I get the sentiment

    1. you right
    2. I get that I just think it's stupid, why would you go so hard with branding that's not at all reflected in your music

Back in my day we used call #2 being a poser
