kogoyosas I remember it you did have to understand those references because they were what showed that the character was a figment of imagination. viewers who didn't understand were at a disadvantage in terms of understanding the plot
got no problem with directors showing their influences in films (loved the references in C'mon C'mon for example) but any movie where I gotta look up an explanation afterwards and it has to deal with references I was unfamiliar with seems pretentious to me
I think that’s less an issue of pretentiousness than just being a somewhat poorly communicated translation of the novel. Because I think people could be familiar w those writers and still be confused by the movie bc it’s ending is pretty abstract
Regardless, people need context to better appreciate all sorts of things- I’d rather accept that there are things I don’t know than call everything that causes slight confusion pretentious 🤷🏾♂️
Everything is intertextual but each reference will be more or less known than others- of course, if every creator restricted themselves to the most familiar aspects of culture to ensure that no one was ever left momentarily in the dark, well, that doesn’t sound too fun to me
