Youre not a fan of some of the newer auteurs like Sono? Who has so many off the wall entertaining films?
As far as the “older” (to me) directors go Teshigahara is top tier for me
Woman In The Dunes & Face Of Another solidified
Didnt expect to see Kitano on there, i feel like Sonatine is the only film id heard you really really loved but that wouldnt be enough to warrant a placement right?
love the guy myself tho fr
Haven't seen any Sono.
Yeah those Teshigahara are amazing
Told you less than a week ago I stan Hana Bi and Sonatine. plus I loved his Zatoichi back when I rented the dvd when most of y'all were in shortpants. Plus I grew up watching that f***ing gameshow he hosts

Brooooo who tf didnt grow up on Takeshis Castle lmao that was a worldwide phenomenon
was wayyy before i ever got into cinema too
Didn’t realized you “stan” those, but thats on me for going off what ive seen on Lbxd, when my own doesnt even contain half of the films ive seen and adore
Sono is amazing, but so versatile and out there that its hard to rec anything, but he’s basically been one of the biggest names out there since early 2000s and has done anything from your standard J-horror, to Yakuza flicks, family dramas to full on arthouse and even a hiphop musical
his work is so crazy i sometimes call him the artsy brother of Miike. Very stylized, energetic and sometimes similar acts of taboo as in Miike films but Sono’s work is in general more layered and intellectual. Masters the use of classical music perfectly too
a mid perhaps

Yeah same I only got LB like halfway through my earnest cinema exploration so a ton of s*** is not logged
You can think of a good Sono to rec me next trade
obviously heard of him but that filmography is too bonkers for me to know where to begin
