EinfinetNo one has to recognize those things to understand the film. Maybe the movie is pretentious, but it’s not because it included references to stuff that influenced the creatives involved
as I remember it you did have to understand those references because they were what showed that the character was a figment of imagination. viewers who didn't understand were at a disadvantage in terms of understanding the plot
got no problem with directors showing their influences in films (loved the references in C'mon C'mon for example) but any movie where I gotta look up an explanation afterwards and it has to deal with references I was unfamiliar with seems pretentious to me
