kogoyosthat's more like pandering than pretentiousness imo
though it's an overused/misused criticism, there are a few films that are definitely pretentious. best example is I'm Thinking of Ending Things, where the audience has to recognize Wordsworth poems, Ralph Albert Blakelock paintings, and Pauline Kael/John Cassavetes essays to really understand the film
No one has to recognize those things to understand the film. Maybe the movie is pretentious, but it’s not because it included references to stuff that influenced the creatives involved
