Tubigthanks for this interview, it kinda helped me process some thoughts
The first Borat film did a great job drawing out a lot of the gross underlying racism that exists in the nation.
This film, comes in a time where racism has become overt and drawn out to the surface. And I really felt like he had portrayed them in a way to humanize them. I mean you hear about Qanon and you instantly just think of some backwards ass rednecks, which they kinda are. But they took in a foreigner in the middle of a pandemic and tried to help him out as best they thought they could.
These people in this country have been brainwashed into these conspiracy theories. At the end of the day, if you truly believe that one side is holding child sacrifices, and the other isn't, there's nothing you can do to get them to switch or see the other side. They've latched onto this idea that the other side is committing the most unthinkable heinous crimes, so literally nothing else matters. But these two guys go out of their way to help this guy so that he didn't get tied to two cows that were lured with turnips tearing him apart. It's ludicrous but there's some humanity down there man.
Long story short, earlier this year I had a couple at work say some racist s*** to me, and we kicked them out and told them they can't come back. The husband came in last week, and I was about to tell him he wasn't allowed here, but his issue was an easy fix so I said f*** it I'll help him real quick. Turns out the wife, the one who actually said the s***, passed away two weeks ago. When I heard that I was just thankful that I took a few minutes to help the guy. Sure his wife was a racist redneck, but at the end of the day this guy's still human, and sending him away and refusing help while he's dealing with grief wouldn't have been a net gain for anyone.
So dealing with that, and then within the same week watching these qanon guys, it really resonated with me.
those rednecks prolly got paid to let them record and stay there like how the frat dudes in the first one got paid to hang out w him in the trailer.. the money prolly played a bigger part than wanting to be kind to a stranger

But man I laughed so damn much at that movie. The Paula Abdul scene might be the f***ing best bit he's landed, and he has a ton of classic bits.

The babysitter scenes were genuinely wholesome, a nice change of pace from all the other horrible people
Oct 24, 2020Solid movie. Wish they touched on the protests a bit, a scene of Borat at a protest would have been perfect. Also, more bits capturing normal people's reactions would have been nice, felt like there were only a few scenes with genuine pedestrians compared to original. Also, I would have like it to be just a little more over the top, like a scene or two to match the chaotic energy of the Naked Hotel Fight or Pamala kidnapping in the OG.

Borat was a movie accompanied by a political statement. Borat 2 is a political statement loosely arranged as a movie. Borat 2 will never be as popular bc you can't separate the statement from the movie and that inherently limits the audience (a good thing, trump voters don't deserve the privilege of enjoying borat)
