Weeknd timed BL perfectly how is that so hard to see. AH was in full rollout mode before the pandemic happened and BL dropped in November 2019, giving it enough time to build momentum before February/March when the pandemic started. LIG was a hit but that was in January, it could’ve been bigger but no album announcement or anything to keep the momentum going. Then other major artist were reluctant to drop music as well.
So for the first time ever, this is including artist like MJ....that a song remained in the top 10 all year on Billboard didn’t have any luck? BL is a huge success I’m not denying that. But these ridiculous chart stats don’t tell the whole story.
Charts have changed quite a bit since MJ.
Of the 12 songs that Wiki lists as being the longest running top 5 hits, only 2 were from before the streaming era. Blinding Lights is the only one from 2020.
Of the 11 longest running top 10 hits, again only 2 were from before the streaming era.
Kind of similar to how the first song to debut at number 1 was MJ in 1995, and within 3 months 3 more songs debuted at number 1. 1995 held the record for most number one debuts with 4; that record wasn’t tied until 2018. Then 2020 shattered that record with 12 #1 debuts.
The Pandemic probably had an effect, since many big names held off from dropping albums or dropped with little promotion. But this is a record that big hits have been getting closer and closer to each year.

I just want to clarify that this record isn't for 52 STRAIGHT weeks in the top 10. He got pushed out three times in December due to Christmas music

Ariana Grande, Drake, Dua Lipa, Taylor Swift (x2), Lady Gaga, Chris Brown, Justin Bieber, Bad Bunny (x3), Charli XCX, Katy Perry, and Miley Cyrus all dropped in 2020. I’d say those are pretty good competition, no?
