The goat of Neo Soul.
I’ve always been ignorant as to where neo soul begins and R&B ends (and vice versa). I feel like there’s a lot of overlap but what’s the defining features that makes them distinct?

Neo Soul includes a bunch of other genres like Jazz, Funk etc. Normally features live instruments and sounds organic. Started with 90s soul.
R&B is such a broad term nowadays so I’d probably use Contemporary R&B which feature prominent drum patterns and combines hip hop, dance pop etc which give it a more commercial sound. Modernised from the traditional R&B with artists like Stevie & Aretha.
the live 1997 record is easily the best live album ive ever heard
12 min version of next lifetime
Dope that a positive thread like this is stickied. Much better than the negative weekly thread that focuses on tearing artists down
Erykah first two albums been in constant rotation for me lately
Throw new Amerykah pt2 in there for me. Mama’s Gun used to be spun heavy for me too
Outside of baduzism I haven’t listened to any of her albums what do you recommend? Outside of D’Angelo and maxwells first two joints I haven’t listened to as much neo soul as I should have

Check out Bilal’s projects if you want more neo-soul. His voice is prince incarnate.

His last album one of my fav r&b albums ever. It literally sounds like he made a r&b album intended for a horror movie. It’s very unique and weird but very creative and fire to me
"BLACK music appreciation" sir
Al Green should be next weeks
She can sing but even when blue eyed soul music week comes up, she doesn’t really make black music so
