One of the master’s of music, no question. Prince stole his gear on the first big tour he was on. He was being clowned extra hard and the band was like ‘ f it let’s take his s***’ then Prince used all the synths n s*** on his next album. I wonder what synth I heard that prince nicked.
Man kicked prince out of his tour, stole his synth then used it to produce his most successful album
Okay so now you and @AudioConsulting got me confused. I NEED THE FACTS
Per @Lawdie request, It's MAXWELL'S week. If I known D'angelo's Voodoo's 20th year anniversary was gonna be yesterday I would've did him instead
but I commit to my schedules.
Let it begin.

Haven't delved into his discrography deep enough (only his two first albums...) but Urban Hang Suite is one my favorite albums of all time and I consider it one of most perfect albums I've ever listened, perfect all the way through

Lol I'm shook as well I always heard the opposite but @AudioConsulting seems like he knows his stuff tbh so I've probably go toward his story, will try to check

So I can't find the original source (it seems to be from a Teena Marie interview that has been deleted from the internet)
Prince had allegedly been added to Rick James’ tour to bolster the headliner’s waning draw. "It was a rough period for Rick," Prince’s guitarist Dez D***erson told biographer Dave Hill. "We would go over like gangbusters, because the black audience was just dying for something new.” James himself famously loathed the Minnesota imp, telling Rolling Stone, “I can't believe people are gullible enough to buy Prince's jive records.” James called Prince “a mentally disturbed young man. He's out to lunch. You can't take his music seriously. He sings songs about oral s***and incest.” James would exact his revenge—as Prince’s 1980 opening act Teena Marie told Alan Light—by allegedly stealing Prince’s programmed synthesizers and using them on his own 1981 album Street Songs, and then sending them back to him “with a thank-you card.” (Prince returned the favor when he persuaded James' date to the American Music Awards, Denise Matthews, to join Vanity 6.)

Teena and Rick were pretty close so I imagine this is what really happened
a thank you card. Both of them were mad petty

D will get his time. His music timeless so it doesn’t matter when I get to him. He’s on the schedule
90’s Maxwell is the GOAT voice IMO
I still cast my lot with D as the goat 90s voice but this goes

I think dr fink recited this story and I’m not sure what audio interview I heard it.
But it goes something like this, Rick made a mistake introducing Prince to his audience as the opening act, Because Prince would get a positive reaction, And at each stop it would start to be more energy going toward Prince.
But Prince would be allegedly teased pretty hard on this tour. You have to remember Stone City Band are all 6 feet funk gods. When he started turning up the musical performance heat, I think that’s when prince would shut the door on Rick ever giving him respect again.
What I think sealed that door is when he came out with Vanity 6. Rick thought prince stole the idea of seeing Mary Jane girls. I think it didn’t help that Prince & his band allegedly stole all the gear from the Stone City Boys.
Later on when the time were huge in eighties, Rick would create protege group to compete with The Time called ‘ process & the doo rags’
They were kind of like The Time meets The Temptations meets electro r&b sound.

I’m guessing Motown put some money behind them
And I think that’s why Rick never would be nice to Prince again.
The evidence is the extended Dave chappelle interview where he goes on for some length mocking prince.

That’s the background I can share & probably that’s all it did take for Rick never to be respectful to Prince again.
