Big Thief debuted their next album at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium. Titled Horsepower, it’s a triple album and features Lucinda Williams, Gillian Welch, and Iris DeMent, all of whom joined the trio onstage.

Introducing the record, Adrianne Lenker joked: “If you had some hopes of hearing some of the songs you might know—those can also be discarded.” Although the band didn’t perform Horsepower in sequence, they did play the 29-song album in full. They were joined by the wider band who they made it with: Russ Pahl and Greg Leisz on pedal steel and guitar, and Hannah Read, Richard Bowden, and Zosha Warpeha on fiddle.

    They're back at it again

  • Damn man! People found the last one underwhelming and a bit too straight forward but I loved it. I hope this drops this year! Big thief album with a Lucinda Williams feat in fall or winter 2026 is gonna be insane

  • Holy smokes!

Pitchfork piece with some details from the show.

    pitchfork.com/story/big-thief-horsepower-live-country-album-probably

The live performance of Horsepower really clarified something for me: Big Thief are getting grounded. This album, on first listen (and not in sequence), is about the essence of feeling and songwriting. There are lyrics here that are so simple you can practically see the shavings on the floor from Lenker whittling them down. “Wait a while, don’t hurry” goes one titular chorus; “Baby, honey, sweetheart, darlin’” goes another titular chorus; “It’s a gift, it’s a pleasure, it’s a joy” goes yet another. Lenker and the band seem to have put their trust in a few truths that govern love and life; these songs want to let those truths speak for themselves. It’s no wonder they’ve gone country.

“21”—one of the first songs Lenker and Meek and ever wrote together, originally titled “Bloom,” an unreleased that dates back to their 2014 Daytrotter session as a couple

The country modality presents a unique challenge for the band: How can this group of players who are so rangy yet dialed in breathe life into this rather familiar and traditional instrumentation? There were a handful of tunes, like “Stay” or the deliriously fun “Spatchcock Chickenshit Bingo,” where the band made it a little more fancy, throwing in the odd filigree or time signature—or in the case of the latter, making it sound like King Crimson at a hoedown.

  • Best band in the world right now. Can’t wait for this.

  • This band and Lenker are on a f***ing tear my God.

  • Should I just start from the top of their discogs with both big thief and Lenker?

Literally the most payola'd critical consensus in recent memory, her label should be ashamed of themselves

Dragon New Warm Mountain is their best album, and the best album of this decade so far, in my opinion.

You don’t find the music, the music finds you brother. Just dive in the discography.

At this rate they will release a quadruple album in 2030

I think I would reccomend masterpiece or capacity first

Dragon new warm mountain is peak but it is really long and I feel like all the slow songs might not grab someone to new to them right away but I could be wrong (sparrow is 11/10 though I think for anyone)

And the song simulation swarm you should listen to right away imo

Bruh their post says they don't even know when it's coming out and that it'll be probably in spring/summer 2027.
Absolutely nuts do do what they did lol. Still looking forward to it but that's a move you do when that thing is done
