@Elric i never got super into Animals yet tbh, but you ever heard any of their/Burdon's psych(?) stuff? i guess 1967
read a RYM review by a favorite of mine who absolutely eviscerated an anti-war song they did because she (vietnam nurse vet) somehow thought he was being disrespectful to the soldiers' pov and got personally offended. but the description of the music itself intrigued me.
I love House of the Rising Sun and like their main other hits I've heard but not much has sunken in as elite level, besides i guess the factor of Burdon's voice being obviously one of the best of his british r&b ilk. I've only got a greatest hits comp from them with a good amount of passable-but-meh r&b songs other than the hits, never made me want to check more. but im realizing now that its only from their era up until 1966. seems a lot of the og Animals left after then so I guess the stuff after might be Burdon solo-ish instead?
hoping that I will be able to come around a bit more to British R&B after my 40s-50s R&B listening though
if the early Who era sinks in even harder
early stones too

Tried to marinate on their discography for years before i decided they kinda sucked s*** at full blown psych and weren't great at consistent, fully realized albums either. Amazing singles though. Lost their goat keyboardist pretty early and they guitarist not long after that and then Burdon joined War
he was more of a boozer than a psych lord and barely wrote any of their good stuff so his attempts at trippy poetry are like what you were imagining in a world without Dylan. He somehow missed the lesson.

Assumed you were already deep into all of it
Assumed you were already deep into all of it
i'm into it of course but not that into it
like for me its usually generally good stuff with occasionally amazing singles for bands who would get better in a few years. but I would love for the earliest Stones, Pretty Things, Zombies to suddenly click on an amazing level for me instead of just being merely good with a few top singles
already love early Who and r&b-ish Yardbirds but even then i can still get the feeling there's more left to appreciate. even Small Faces too since my favorite of theirs is Ogdens' Nut Gone Flake which im pretty sure you heavily disagree with
basically since I already liked it as an absolute rhythm & blues novice, I think I'll be able to like it more as a rhythm & blues fan. unless i discover its just poverty honkey versions of the real thing

i heard a Burdon-less War album which was decent but i found out they're one of those bands who have a few super famous hits that annoy me a lot
Why Can't We Be Friends and Low Rider

I mean I enjoy listening to most of the stuff those guys did back then since ive marinated on them so long but you're not wrong about it mainly being top singles at this point. I think you're liking it about as much as you should be. I know the roots stuff much better now and it doesn't make me think these lads are poverty, if anything I appreciate their enthusiasm even more.
Albums got way more consistent next year

speaking of primordial versions of artists... how about doo-wop Dio?

speaking of primordial versions of artists... how about doo-wop Dio?
yeah when i saw how far back his discography went
some of these dudes were at it for decades before they hit
George Clinton had a similar trajectory... doo wop back in the 50s...years between releases... whole style changes in the meantime. industry was ruthless back then but also not sure if green artists get so many chances now. or maybe it was just the indomitable will of said artists refusing to give up.
