damn yeah maybe i should check out some ronnie hawkins

thought Quicksilver were the first ones to mythologize Bo with a double sided Diddley cover single but nope

also gotta give Eric Burdon prop for this one, the opening track on the Animals first album lays out the whole history of rock up to that very moment around Bo

but can we agree Jack had the most scorching tone since Jeff and Jimmy

i know his vocal there was a little but goddamn he has the nastiest sounding guitar

guitar sounds good but cant quite agree about that statement lol, and im not really a giant jimmy page fan anyway.

i peeped Loretta Lynn's Van Lear Rose yesterday though mostly out of curiosity and it was actually great especially the title track which really I loved. so maybe that can be my gateway into appreciating Jack more than just casual fandom

another banger from this dude that was gnarly enough for The S***Pistols to cover wonder if they knew it was the reviled Page thrashing on there

Dead didnt form until 1965 and the earliest I heard from them is 1966

but check this out from 1964 with 3 dead members on it and a great band name

interesting that you prefer rootsy Dead to psych, but I guess it makes some sense given your attitude about their noodling. The rootsier stuff took me more time to appreciate, and I can tell I'll (hopefully) still come to appreciate it more in the future because there's a lot of stuff now I still don't love. but I'm hoping that it's just because of s***ty vocals and the country/folk style not being understood enough by me to really appreciate it

they introduced me to a lot of great songs though tbh, like Merle's Mama Tried and Sing Me Back Home, Johnny Cash's Big River, Otis' Hard to Handle, Kris Kristofferson's Me and Bobby McGee. i'll be extremely happy if my country (+folk in the future) learning leads me to appreciate their whole craft more. right now my Deadhead fandom has basically been going for the long and psych/jazz jams rather than the simple rootsy labors of love

making my 64 list rn btw

whats your process for making the list? still doing research or just adding stuff you already know?

im tempted to do separate lists in addition to my main one for brit invasion, motown, blues, country etc

im just going through my library and getting the top 20ish best song, then putting in a list and trying to roughly rank them

i imagine its about to get a lot harder as the years progress though but might just do the same thing but spend more time on it. 1964 not too stacked for me yet compared to what it'll be like in a few years

yeah apparently the widepsread release was 1965 but the recording and this obscure(?) US original release was 1964 so thats what ive always had it in my library as

    45cat.com/record/31725

december 1964: "On the 14th, Billboard magazine has the first U.S. press mention of The Who in an article on Decca Records declaring that "I Can't Explain" backed with "Bald Headed Woman" will be "coming out this week". Two days later the first review appears in Variety followed by Cash Box on the 19th. Variety calls "I Can't Explain" a "typical rocking entry with a good sound." Cash Box gets confused, assuming "Bald-Headed Woman" is the A-side, and dismisses "I Can't Explain" as "an attention-getting shuffle-rock'er." It is unclear whether the single has its national release at this time."

so i guess its 1964 technically but pretty much 65

i just dont see it as stacked compared to the next few. definitely more stacked than 63, but im just thinking it will get exponentially more difficult to rank over the next 3 years. and then at that point will reach the most stacked period possible for a little while

considering the 50s guys were still doing great work (masterful in Roys case) its super stacked

did you check out the Bo and Jerry Lee jams on page 44? incredible
