@Elric you heard any Allen Toussaint stuff? he seems to be one of the biggest figures of New Orleans R&B after the goat Fats
kinda unwieldy to try to look up his stuff though because he was a more behind-the-scenes Spector type of guy but still has his own stuff.
relevant to 1963 cuz he wrote Otis' Pain in My Heart under a pseudonym
also relevant to 1964 since he wrote A Certain Girl which has great yardbirds version ofc

!https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hTmCKCcGvwcHeard of him but never knew what he was about
will look into it
Thoughts on my ranking?
#13-19 were completely new to me and on repeat for months
that clutch alone made diving into '63 more than worthwhile. Songs should be more famous.

Tommy was a Buddy Holly wannabe that came out with this hit in '62 that is a pretty uncanny mimic tbh

but this b-side is way way better and has some almost proto psych fuzz elements
made my top 20 for 1962.

this one is might be I Will Follow Him type of corny to you but it has an infectious energy that slays me

hes pretty consistent and inventive
already knew him from a long time ago when i was researching other projects Curt Boettcher had produced besides Sagittarius and Millennium and i found this stunner
(almost Astral Weeks vibes)
allmusic.com/album/its-now-winters-day-mw0000745404
had a crazy career arc now that i know his early stuff
set out to fulfill Buddy's destiny and he didnt entirely fail

Maybe diet buddy
poverty too harsh if he keeps cracking the top 20
And ew I hate those scarrufi twinks but yeah I'm not surprised you think so
How in the world has Otis not sunk in? Have you seen Monterey Pop?
1964
greatest band of all time shows up

song was a game changer for pushing rock guitar much further into the heavy riff territory its famous for (thanks to 17 year old Dave Davies) and also for the punk sneer which had been missing from rock for half a decade (his big brother Ray)
the follow up just as good

best song of 1964 is when i grow up to be a man by the beach boys
didnt realize till earlier today that She Knows Me Too Well was released in '64 as it's b-side
first song Brian wrote on weed (man)

idk, Otis' voice honestly just doesnt' sound very good to me. Otis Blue to me is lowkey just mostly songs I already know and somewhat like/indifferent towards but in renditions that are decent at best. Ofc ik im missing something with my lacking soul knowledge in what makes those renditions actually special
blasphemy I'm sure but as of right now Otis Blue is one of the classic albums where I least understand how it's supposed to be a masterpiece. like I'm just listening to those versions of My Girl, Satisfaction, Rock Me Baby like really? this is supposed to be some of the greatest soul ever recorded? i just dont get it. and I used to like Sitting on the Dock of the Bay back in my early early days of dust listening but it leaves me cold now somehow
haven't seen the Monterey Pop performances so i guess that could help me, always sorta felt like his voice didn't really match what he looked like in pictures

!https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nVbGHYGKrScYou Really Got Me is one of my favs but All Day and All of the Night always just seemed like a bit of a pale imitation to me ngl especially the solo which is a super obvious attempt to recapture You Really Got Me's magic. it's still great of course but it wouldnt crack my top 25 Kinks songs and I'm never listening on repeat like I am with You Really Got Me
and the solo on You Really Got Me actually could be my least favorite part of the song anyway which might be a weird opinion

Ok yeah I've never dug his fast songs and covers that much, it's all about the slow building ballads where he comes in like a force of nature on the crescendo
Pain In My Heart was an easy top 10 for '63
He had the most revolutionary new singing style since Ray imo, so much more raw than anything else up to that point (the m.g.'s matched his intensity)
Monterey is mandatory viewing for any psych stan
getting to see Otis lay waste to all the hippies is just the cherry on top of seeing dozens of goats in their prime (in ridiculous HD thanks to criterion)

Well Dave was 17
forgivable considering how adaptable he was to whatever bonkers idea Ray had over the years
The solo he played in the video I posted for All Day
much wilder than the studio version
nvm come see about me came out in 64 its a wrap
I haven't looked at the year too hard yet but A Change Is Gonna Come is pretty insurmountable

lol yea u probably right
lol yea u probably right
This always breaks me down into the full spectrum of shambles as well

supremes went where did our love go, baby love, come see about me all in a row
Berry Gordy's seeds blossoming
incredible year for Motown across the board
Four Tops joined the fray too
Beach Boys release I Get Around single with Don't Worry Baby as the b-side
flawless
There are other singles that can rival it but nothing tops that combo
